He is no longer even trying to close GITMO. Why? Because, after two years in office, he's finally caught on to the fact that there is no better place to house those pieces of shit. Sure he's still playing lip service to closing it, but he won't. He's even started the military tribunals again.
It was Bush that started the war rightly or wrongly and it was his plans, policies, and decisions that brought about victory. Now the Iraqi people are free of Saddam Hussein, what they do now is up to them.

The Lieutenant Colonel who served 18 months in Baghdad told me that after the successful invasion the war that followed and cost us some many lives was entirely avoidable and due to the erroneous policies of Dubya's administration.

Conservatives lied to get to invade a sovergn country that posed no threat to us, when we needed to be fully engaged in the eradication of Al-Quida. Once our military took Bagdad and overwhelmed Saddam's army in a cakewalk, conservatives totally fucked up transitioning to a new administration. Totally fucked it up by relying solely on ideology. They wanted to establish a free market utopia in the Middle East, they even tried to seize and sell off government assets. That's as illegal as you can get.
So, here's what happens when you press your libertarian economic principles:
When it all fell flat and factories started being boarded up, potable water was not available, electricity was not available, medical care was not available, it wasn't safe to walk the streets, and all the people with any technical skills had fled the country, people revolted violently. It was easy for different factions to recruit fighters, and anarchy broke out. Because people who don't like government, were put in charge of building a government.
So, after 4000 of our soldiers dead, tens of thousands more forever handicapped, billions of dollars spent to put our economy in the dumpster, probably over 100,000 Iraqi lives lost and our standing in the eyes of the rest of the world trashed, finally, by sheer force of firepower and perseverance, we have managed to force enough short term stability to get the fuck out of there.
We wrecked Iraq, our Army, our economy, and our standing in the world.
You call that winning?

I don't agree with the reasons that the USA deployed troops but I have no sympathy for the dead soldiers. I would if they were drafted into service but current military forces are in the military by THEIR OWN CHOICE. They chose to accept and take those risks and accept the consequences. If you don't want to risk being a dead soldier then don't volunteer to serve.

No Chuck I call our combat troops leaving by choice because they are no longer needed there, a victory. And that is largely due to the efforts and planning of the Bush administration. I know that must be a difficult thing to read for someone who has been ginned up for so long on Bush hate, but you're just going to have to bite down hard and get over it.

I wonder if any of the fox news watchers on here ever saw the many interviews with Bob Woodward who had frequent access to President Bush, Vice President Cheney, et al. during the war and who claimed that "The Surge" was a smoke screen for other black ops that were really responsible for the change in momentum in the war and that "The Surge" is given credit as a diversionary tactic because nobody wants to reveal what was really taking place (because of the sensitive intelligence involved, not for ideological or political reasons). I think he even revisited this claim later in a 60 Minutes interview and claimed elsewhere he would consider revealing this information if it ever becomes declassified or gets leaked by others.

Dubya's policies actually shifted the balance of power in favor of pro-Iranian Shia factions, which could really inure to our geopolitical detriment when it comes to our geopolitical interests with respect to isolating the militantly anti-USA and anti-Israel Iranian regime. Once again, an Army Lieutenant Colonel who served in BAghdad for 18 months told be that for 20 bucks per month per capita we could have co-opted the Sunni soldiers and government employees and avoided the whole anti-occupation war that cost us so much.

Why shouldn't we repay the hicks for the billions of dollars they have leached from the nations coffers to support their "american" lifestyle? It's funny that up until the early 70's that people bitched and moaned about how Los Estados Unitos (the Great Satan) would fight a war, win and spend the next however many years rebuilding the defeated. Like the rebuilding of Germany and Japan after WWII. After Viet Nam that strategy seemed to be replaced by conquering then getting the fuck out...or staying until it wasn't adventageous anymore. And people bitch and now because every broken vase hasn't been fixed. I'm not really saying one strategy or the other is the better. It's more like I'm saying everyone will never be happy. War is a grim business, no matter which "side" of the political fence pulls the trigger.
