Loli isn't all that common but its there. Some people tend to mistake moe for loli but Kodomo no Jikan(Child's Time) is loli.

Japanese anime tends to have some element or story line with a sudden tragedy. There is a sports anime called "Major" that follows the life of a kid from his time as a small child till he is in his late teens/ early 20s. The first episode they Kill off his mother when he's a baby then when he's 5 years old he a cute and determined kid who idolizes his father who is a pitcher for a japanese pro team. They kill off the father as the result of a beaner to the head. He dies at home and the little kid finds the body and spends the morning with it not understanding he's dead.

Peacemaker Kurogane has a very likeable female supporting character get gang raped and murdered. The gang rape is strongly implied and occurs some-what off camera.

Elfen Lied doesn't have one fucking character that doesn't have some seriously tragic shit in their past....torture, murder or sexual abuse to name a few.

Black Lagoon has a story arc of a set of homicidal twins that are the product of the snuff-kiddie porn industry. Not many anime show a tween aged girl getting shot in the head at point blank range or two kids hammer nails into a guys skull and crawling around in his blood.

Tengen Toppa Gurren Laggan kills off a pivotal character in like the 6th episode. He's the leader, heart and spirit of the group. Even the end of the show is on a down note and bitter sweet.

Clannad....christ...The second season actually squeezed a fucking tear out me and I'm practically dead inside.

Thats the great thing about watching anime....your favorite character might just get killed or get royally fucked.
