I wouldn't be into it except my kids are. The US vs England was the first game I watched in which my offspring wasn't playing. It's an oncoming train as all these soccer kids come of age.
A smart person would be assembling a respectable US soccer league.

90% of the country is bandwagon jumpers. Dane Cook sucks, but enough people think he's supposed to be funny, so they laugh. Blair Witch Project was shit, but everyone heard how good it was and were afraid to go against the hype, they claimed to enjoy it. Where were all these Patriot fans I trip over nowadays when the team sucked? NYC baseball fans are split 50/50, 50% have a favorite team, and 50% root for whoever is winning and hide their jerseys & hats of the other team.
I wish we could take the soccer band wagon, set it on fire, and roll it off a cliff.

A friends father (cuban who bailed upon castro) explained the game to me as a game of triangles, and it is. The dude is an engineer and that's how he sees it. It begins to make sense when you watch for triangles working up the pitch.

Soccer is good game, definitely a game of angles and it bears striking similarities to American football in many ways, but it's only when played by good players. The English Premier League yes, MLS, not quite yet.

The sudden hype is from the perfect storm that's brewing: 1) USA, historically also-rans in world cup, are pulling out performances like movie plotlines, 2) USA's next game is a rematch with the very team that ended their last world cup run, 3) The teams they'd face after a win over Ghana have not been performing up to the level of the USA team. There's a serious chance USA gets deep into the playoffs - quarterfinals - before they'd hit rough waters. That's rare, they've made quarterfinals only twice since 1930.
This sums up USA's run so far, with the bad officiating and good goals called back: right to left, and still winning.

I am one of the few TRUE Patriots fans in the world, I liked them going back to all the 2-14 seasons between 1972-1991!! I agree, these fair weather bandwagon-jackers are a fucking joke. Let's hear it for Steve Grogan!!
Soccer as a televised sport blows, but a LIVE game in a place like <insert any European city> is an event worth attending;
I donated (the equivalent of) 2 hours worth of hott striper-esque cum gobbling to my nephew's soccer league each of the last two seasons, a sure sign I am getting old and will soon be permanently house bound in my Burg-lair with round-the-clock "nursing"...

Soccer is a symbol of Western European socialism. They say if we try it we will like it and then scratch our heads as to how we ever got along without it. We didn't want it back in the 70's the last time they tried to push both down our throats, so I don't see why now would be any different. As I see it Rugby is far superior game to soccer anyway and given just 10% of the money soccer has had supporting its expansion, it would now be played at every school in the country.

I don't know have2cit, I may have to disagree with you here. When you have kids and see the entire outfield looking for 4-leaf clovers out there during a little league game vs a well organized soccer league of the same age and see the difference in interest and participation from the kids you begin to see the interest. There will be a groundswell of interest in soccer in the next 10-15 yrs when all these kids get into the ESPN demographic. It's inevitable.
No knock on Rugby or NCAA football, but pretty soon almost everyone will have played some soccer vs how many played football or baseball or basketball beyond little league much less rugby.
Soccer is a painfully boring game to watch. They will have do something about scoring and the penalties to really break through to the big time here, though. There has to be a way for every play and every touch to amount to something.

Having played both myself as a youngster, I know the difference in activity levels between the games and concur. I just get the feeling they are trying to push soccer on us. "Go ahead watch it a while, you'll like it. Here drink some kool-aid while you're at it". Just like they're pushing their style of government on us. "Here try some free government health care, once you have it you'll never want to be without it". No sir, neither is for me.

That's my point exactly. After 20 yrs of indoctrination and participation these kids are reaching the demographic that broadcasters/advertisers pay attention to, and additionally, it's a sport that appeals to males and females alike. They can reach them all with one ad. This doesn't even take into account all the immigrants legal and otherwise here who are passionate about the sport.
Let's put it this way- US World Cup viewership doubled from four years ago. That's not insignificant.
I still don't care a lot for the sport, but soon I'll be in the minority.

I was talking about the development of world class players, not the marketing demographics. With all these youth soccer groups all over the U.S. for the last twenty years you would think we would have developed our own Ronaldo, Beckham, or Rooney by now. The closest thing we have is Donavan and some good goalies. Donavan is good but he wouldn't land a spot on an international dream team. Some American is going to have to reach that level before soccer reaches the significance of the NFL, NBA, or MLB in our culture.

In the USA they play basketball in the 'hood, not soccer, and at high schools and colleges in the USA the football players get tons of pussy, not the soccer players.

You won't know if the American youth are good in soccer yet or not, because the Euros look at our kids the same way we look at giant Africans playing NBA basketball or being place kickers. Arte you telling me there isn't a kid in Europe or Africa or South America without a 99mph fastball?
The kids are here in soccer- there is no system to find them. There is no scouting system because there is no pay-back for it just yet. Just hide and watch, as my Grandmother used to say.

Better Hispanic game than soccer: On Sundays the migrant workers, in the town next door, will go to the rec field, undo the top of the volleyball net, so it hangs low, and play volley ball w/their feet. Some guys in work boots, cowboy boots, bare feet, sneakers, what ever.

Oh yea, soccer will catch on about the same time we see a chinese kid winning the slam dunk contest. We have heard all this crap before in 06, 02 and in past years. Soccer is a sport for smelly euros with mullets. Soccer is for filthy cans that after games go home and beat their wives. Soccer is for the third world counties who's average education level is the 3 grade. No one in America wants to see someone acting like they have been shot in the face when they get fouled. That is what soccer player does all the time. I don't need to see a bunch of dirty mexicans faking injuries every 5 minutes. Oh and lets not forget the soccer hooligans. These are usually drunk euros and third world dead enders that throw piss and blood bombs at each other. Oh yea, thats what we need in this country. We already have raider fans do we need these other freaks to? I was happy that team USA lost in this thing. So Americans could stop pretending they actually cared. The World Cup gave people an excuse to go out to the bar and get smashed early in the day. Soccer ranks up there with darts here in America and it will stay that way. Now let me get back to watching Inside NASCAR.

Soccer interest requires either participation, I fist played the game back in the late 60s and enjoyed it, or as a spectator sport it requires an intense rooting interest for one's team. One can catch a game of American football without an intense partisan interest, due to its fluid and dynamic nature, and it has become much more dynamic since the post-Darryl Stingley incident rule changes.

There is no system to find them, because there isn't a significant level of play in the mens division of the NCAA. That's when they start setting up mechanisms to find and recruit these kids. Unless the Euros start coming over and holding those tournaments like we do all over Africa scouting for basketball players.

ESPN hyped it 100 times more this year compared to four years ago because they vastly overpaid for the rights fees.
I live in the burbs and tons of kids here play organized soccer, but you never see them in their free time kicking a soccer ball around or playing a game of pick-up soccer, if they are outside they are either shooting hoops, skateboarding or playing the grand old game of "Smear the Queer."
Kids play soccer in America because their parents want them to get some exercise, it's the least dangerous of the teams sports, its the easiest to play and its cheap.
