I was in 7th grade and our teachers made a huge deal about it. I remember my social studies teacher just about had a stroke when he went off about how badly we would be punished if any student was heard making a joke about the incident. He looked like he wanted to hit someone. After his speech he was pulled aside by the principal and vice principle for a talk. The next day someone asked him what the official soft drink of Nasa was....Sprite because they couldn't get 7 up. He had to take a few days off after that.
