E.Y.Davis Human Garbage Registered: 04/02/09 Posts: 1541 Loc: Mississippi	A few months ago my local grocery store stopped stocking my favorite disposable razors, then the local Walmart a short drive further down the road followed in removing my brand. Being near Christmas at the time, I splurged and bought a Braun (Series 7) electric razor, but it didn't live up to expectations. Since then, I've tried every disposable razor out there: 2 blades, 3 blades, 4 blades, etc, etc. Now I've decided to take the plunge and look into old fashioned double edged safety razors. I'm still a bit too nervous to go full out and get a straight razor. Just curious if anybody else shaves with safety razors or straight razors? I'm trying to decide between the Merkur Vision: and the Futur: The HD 34C is recommended for newbies: _________________________ --Some of us look for The Way in opium and some in God, some of us in whiskey and some in love. Anonymous Unregistered	gillette is coming out with the ProGlide on June 6th...Oh boy... but really anything YOU like they do a survey and coduct a focus group to determine that nobody likes it except for you....THOSE FUCKERS....I lost a lot of shit I enjoyed over the years over stupid corporate bullshit. I understand they have to make a profit....but fuck grandfather in the guys who enjoy the old shit.

Even my barber uses a fake straight razor. It looks like a straight razor but instead of a permanent blade, it has a slotted bar that a disposable razor blade is inserted into. I am almost done doing my online shopping and putting together a kit. Also you're less likely to permanently fuck it up. My antique straight razor fell on my bathroom floor after bouncing off the edge of the sink and now has a nick in the blade. I haven't used that style in a couple of years and right now I buy cheap disposables. While there is something satisfying about a close shave I find it not worth the bother. I pretty much shave with a blade twice a week at most and otherwise use an electric beard trimmer to tame my stubble. My facial hair constantly changes, right now I just have big side burns but I've been pondering rocking a "Lemmy" for a while. My advice with straight razors is to follow your barber's lead. I think the "fake" type are easier to maintain than the real ones and have a sharper edge. Hope you find something you like. The one shaving product I really want is one of those shaving cream warming machines. _________________________

The manual says that there's an adjustment period. That said, I have a Nixonian beard, and use the Braun 7 Tuesdays-Fridays. The problem is that it just doesn't work by itself. You need to go back over certain areas with a razor. The hair needs to be exactly the right length and sitting in just the right position for the electric razor to work. I outline with a very cheap Krogers single blade disposable and trim with an electric trimmer. I use Neutrogena skin clearing shave cream or a gel to avoid ingrown hairs where I outline. I get my head shaved once a week and he details the edges of my head/beardline etc. with one of those little cartridge razors. It is a slick look. I did move up in price on the razor because I found a good deal on teh internets, but I otherwise tried to keep middle of the road on price. But the other thing that he said, and other people have also said, is that the traditional blades are much better if you put the time in on conditioning the blade. Even though you are probably correct, I could never buy anything that was inferior because I didn't want to do the work it took to use a superior product. I may someday try a straight razor, but not right now. As far as the warm shaving cream, I'll let you know. Supposedly keeping the shaving mug partially submerged in hot water in your sink and mixing up the shaving cream with hot water is supposed to do the same thing as a fancy machine.
