Whichever genre film you intend to make, there are
these three basic techniques you can use:

In old-time traditional film-making each of these
techniques is known with an Italian name. It is to be
noted that Italy was a originator of "drama" from
the olden days. Italy gave the world culture, and
Greece gave the world Law, Sceince, mathematics, etc.

Here are the THREE techniques when you set about to
make film, and want to film any written sequence in
your screenplay.

1. CHIARASCURO: This is the DETAIL in the background
of your actors or main subject of the camera. The
Detail could be a number of items or the play of
shadows on the wall or on the floor. This is very much
used in old black & white films from the 1950s, etc.
Watch them again to see this.

2. MIS-EN-SCENE: This is the movement of the camera
as the actors move. This is most evident in continuous
moving Long Shots in some films. Many famous directors
used Mis-En-Scene technique without any dialog between
the main actors in front of the camera. As example,
watch the final gunfight scene between Charles Bronson
and Henry Fonda in Leone's C'era Una Volta Il West,
or the scene of the pickpockets going about stealing
wallets and purses from passengers on a railway platform
in Bresson's film Pickpocket. Both these videoclips are
available on YouTube so you can see how the director
moved the camera to tell the story. Mis-En-Scene is
what differentiates the film-maker from the amateur.

3. SFUMATO: This is the term for using clouds or
smoke to create a noir-style atmosphere. This is used
very much in movies everywhere although we may not
notice this.

You can write many storylines, and good scripts, etc.
but if you don't follow the above basic 3 techniques,
your film will look like a flat home video. You have
to create details in the set, the movement of the camera
around the actors, and the physical atmosphere for
the scene being filmed. Then it will look like a story
into which the viewer will step, and it will not look
like a flat home video.
