Starter fluid for ether(make sure the can says it contains diethyl ehter) unless the laws have changed to prohibit it or require the addition of other chemicals to the mix that won't evaporate. I used to use a 2 foot length of 1/2" (maybe 3/4") stainless tubing. Spray the starter fluid into the tubing and point the end of the tubing or pipe into a glass jar. Most, not all, of the petrolium distiliates will disperse during transit from the spray can down the tube, Its not technical grade buts its closer than you can get for a poor man's operation in your back yard at least for small quanities.

when performed effectively this method can yield upwards of 85% ether. When done poorly you have still ridded your starting fluid of the petroleum distillates that are used to lubricate the inside of the engine. Whether theres hexane and/or butane and/or propane left after the distillation youre at least no longer lubing up your airways.
1. fill the smaller container with starting fluid
2duct tape the plastic hose to the mouth of the container
3. stab one hole in the top and bottom of the bag of ice
4run the tube through the ice(this may require a bit of work
5 duct tape the other end of the hose o the larger empty container.
thats the main portion of the distiller. ensure that the bag is at a higher elevcation than the two clear containers. place it on a table and them on the ground or something.
heat the water to anywhere between 34.9 degrees celsius(Diethyl ethers boiling point) and 69 degrees celsius(the boiling point of hexane)
place the bowl under the glass container now containing ether and partially submerge the container of ether in it. the water should retain a temperature within this 30 degree celsius range for a fairly long period of time. if you find it growing to cool simply switch out the water for a different bowl of water.
once you have all this set up it is just a matter of time. remember the higher the temperature used the more likely you are to get contaminants in the ether so it comes down to time efficiency or purity. i hope that this has been helpful
