Making money these days presents unique, daunting challenges ... and I dont mean "a job", I am talking Liquidity, security, money to provide for yourself indefinitely, and accomodate all the whores you want.
Foreign (and recently, domestic) stocks seem to present the best "typical" way to increase, or preserve your wealth. If you are not vested in China somehow, you are missing the boat. Unconventional strategies, such as buying into entities that specialize in buying out annuities and policies from desperate idiots too dumb or stupid to manage their life responsibly, who will trade their arrangement for lump sum payments equal to 40% LTV offer a decent and predictable return right now. Burg has next year's whore parade covered via this route.... 
But it is challenging, and this is no time to be sitting on one's arse....

I'd be wary of sizable investments in Chinese securities. Their accounting standards and practices are a little "unusual". Also, there really isn't much transparency in their economic reporting. Some of the statistics published by the Chinese government don't make a lot of sense.

Direct investment in CHINESE companies, is suicidal, Nitne is correct regarding the whole fucking country and their perverted accounting and concept of "DEBT"....what I really mean is trying to find funds that focus on American or Euro companies who are taking advantage of China's voracious consumption of any and all things, especially commodities (India too, including regards to FOOD)..... A large portion of my Marketing career revolved around packaging, and Paper as we all know is a commodity...From 1999 pretty much through the decade to now, China's consumption of Trees in all converted forms meant that, if you had even a toehold in a paper company with their own forests, you made money in your sleep. My guilt from being in this industry, given my academic pedigree, behooved me to stick my footrests into the tech companies packaging all that 'puter shiite in redundant and wasteful schemes, and in the process turn my hearing aid up when rolling by the boardroom during discussions of mergers, Pre-dot cum bubble of course.... Gahhhd bless Georgia Pacific, Hewlet Packard and ARIBA! And Lou, the Gold bubble is the next pop you will hear in your sleep....so all you degenerate pervs and drugged out whores, DO NOT pawn your family heirlooms .... :banana_BabyDoll:

So you think the gold bubble will "pop". Do you buy the stories of major financial institutions working to keep the price of gold and silver down? Those stories are inbetween all the "blame Isreal" stories on the conspiracy kook sites.
My buddy that deals with a lot of shipping companies told me a couple years ago that if you can come up w/ a product the Chinese love, there is a ton of $$ to be made, because most of those shipping containers return empty. He said the cost of shipping to China was less than 1/2 of shipping from there.

The interesting thing about gold is that the price has been driven up largely not because it is the safe haven from currency volatility, but simply because there may not be any more gold to be found. There hasn't been a significant gold find in years even though mining companies have been spending money out the ass trying to find new veins. There is a growing consensus that all the gold that ever will be mined has already been mined. That alone will keep gold prices up indefinitely.

Not a shot at you Nitne but the Gold market is quite simply a wicked stepsister to Religion. The market bottomed and all of a sudden faith gave way to trinkets. Why ask for 10 percent of someones soul when you could hit their jewelry box?. Same same and simple as. The "paid programming" part of Cable will someday be studied as points in our history.

When the market started to tank a couple years ago, gold started to soar. Then the SPOT price came down, even though gold was scarce. Mint that produce collectible gold coins were having to do lotteries, because they couldn't fill orders. If anything the "paper" gold price is inflated, because there is more paper gold than physical gold.
There is more gold out there to be had, but the price has to stay over a certain level for it to be worth extracting, much like the oil in Canada's tar sands or China's coal to oil plants.

Theres more gold out there to be had because there are more idiots out there to be exploited. Why would you mine for it when you could advertise for it?. Put your "unused" gold in an envelope and take a sixty percent hit... why not?. lol
All your gold is unused, yes?. Even when you wear it are you really using it?. The only time gold is used is when it's traded based on the imaginary scale of things deemed valuable. See my previous post concerning religion.

I have a theory that if you first hear about a product or service through radio ads, its probably a scam. Not a good way to sell grandma's rings to make the mortgage payment, but very handy to the people that made off with your jewelry box while you were on vacation.

Gold has "functional value" in electronics - it's not solely driven by speculative or jewelry/cosmetic demand. Between that functional value and inflation triggering Gold Fever as everyone searches for a hedge, I don't see a price collapse short of a major discovery.

They are building a *massive* bubble right now. If you liked Enron's off-books techniques for hiding bad assets you'd love local government accounting in China - it's Andy Fastow writ large.
The stats the Chinese government publishes may be true about *national* debt/GNP ratios, but local government debt is 2x or 3x that - or more - as far as I can tell.
Since local governments are severely constrained in issuing debt by the nation government, all of that local debt is issued by what we would call here "public sector SIVs" that are owned by local governments and use money borrowed from banks (i.e, a lot of demand-deposit money). The national government knows there's a problem but doesn't seem to have a handle on how big it is (given that every few months they need to issue new orders to the banks to come clean on how much money has been lent to these SIVs).
All of those Chinese consumers buying things is an irresistible thought, but it's been that for a long time and I don't know of anyone making a killing there yet. I'm waiting for someone foreign to find a way to actually make money in China before investing, and I'm also waiting for the current bubble to pop to see how the government handles it (and the inevitable bank runs, which will be a special problem in China).

I thought my second post clarified shit....and 3 years is indeed a LONG time in the financial and economic global jungle. But I freely admit, in '07 when I made that post, I was sick, high, bouncing back and forth between coasts (see Floofin's Map "Where is Burg?") and was not at all aware or conversant in what the shit heads were doing with Derivatives...I also thought China's <calgon>"Ancient Chinese Secret" </calgon> accounting antics wereon their last leg. I severely underestimated the closets in the Chinese Politburo available to hide all kinds of shit, including dead hookers. My Bad

The last several posts I have made regarding the economy (and money and investing, etc) have carried within them a message that should be clear, as well as alarming and downright scary:
THINGS HAVE CHANGED, EVERYTHING, and not for the better...I have told many friends here on the phone or via messenger, THE SYSTEM is BROKEN, and even I, Da Burg, was not cognizant of the truly massive and sweeping nature of just how bad things have become, how fucked up the market forces and structure have become and, most disturbingly, how much people have degenerated to the point where they are completely unwilling and unable to do what is right and what is in the best interest of the greater good (they cant even do the right thing out of a sense of selfish self preservation...they ONLY do what is going to provide immediate gratification and/or pleasure, whether it is sex, revenge, pride, etc.)
My (half serious, more jocular than earnest) claims of being recession proof were based in part upon an understanding of things under the old rules and pradigms, etc. As we said before in other threads, claims and boasts and insults I made back in 2007 can hardly expect to be honored or stand up in today's (2010) world....seriously.
