The great strategic surprise is that such a small percentage of Iraqi deaths were caused by American fire. I never fell for the notion that Iraqis would dance for joy at Sadam being ousted, but I also never imaged that the Iraqis would use it as an excuse to slaughter each other.

jrv, the momumental stupidity in this last paragraph annuls everything of value in the rest of your post. Knowing when to stop is not one of your qualities.
Oh, so you anticipated this? Let's see evidence of that.
European history over the last century doesn't suggest you have much to stand on to to be critical.
1. Anticipate what? That certain factions in Iraq would start a violent, armed struggle among themselves?
No, I didn't anticipate that, but I didn't anticipate either that the US government would have the audacity to illegally invade another (sovereign) country, overthrow its government, install their own puppet-government, have the former head of state killed and occupy the same country for years to come.
However, I do think that well-paid, well-educated, acclaimed connaisseurs of the Iraqi state, demography and culture could and should have anticipated this. That they did not merely confirms the stupidity of this whole undertaking.
2. European history over the last century?
You're quite selective, jrv. Could you please elaborate a bit, because I'm afraid I don't quite understand what you're getting at.
And to claim that I ain't critical of whatever politics are (or were) being followed, is inaccurate.
