Not of XPT, calm down you dipshits, but out of the ratrace.
I want to sleep in every day, go to the dojo on odd days and go to cooking classes or the library on evens. I don't need a flashy car. I don't need a huge house. I don't need a million dollars. I don't even need health care because I'm a Canadian.
I don't want to take part in the fucking ratrace any more.
What do you guys reasonably think would be enough money to retire with? Keep in mind I've been living on peanuts for the last five years as I paid off 90% of all my debts, so my living expenses are pretty minimal right now.

That shouldn't be too hard to figure out. Decide how many more years you gamble you might live. Figure out what you are spending now. Check a long-term but post WW2 historical inflation index. Apply whatever seems to be the longterm rate of inflation to your projected expenses over the period you anticipate living. See how much you need.
Probably some investment planning websites have online calculators to deduce such things.

I love it, someone who understands. Freedom from want. Freedom to do what we want. Excellent. How much money does it take? What you've got, probably, that's what the fulltime RV'ers at the Escapees forum will tell you. Even though you might not want to travel full time, there are tons of discussions on how much it takes to get along. You can do arithmetic, just try to be through and pad it a little. I would have been on the road 3 years ago if I had health care, I have to wait 'til I'm 55, about two years to go. Keep us posted.

And a life free of want is pretty empty- it's basically devoid of motivation to "do". You want out? Bad news: There is no "out", friend.
My guess is a retiree who wants to live like a carefree pauper needs about US$800,000 in assets and a plan to live only about 10 years. I'm 41 and have $800,000 in assets now. Unfortunately 75% of that is real estate owned free and clear, and I have an expectation of asset deflation. By the time I'm 50 my plan is for $2 million or thereabouts, but then I do plan to keep working till I'm 70 at which time I might be worth $5 or $6 million.
Maybe I'll start up a chain of Taco Bells or something like that. You need about a million liquid to make that move.
My fear is I'll be wrinkly and smell funny (funnier) by my retirement age of 70, which will put a limit on how many 18 year-olds' asses I can fuck. Not only because they'll find me even more gross than I am at 41, but also because the Admiral's wang is already showing signs of not operating with the same pneumatic vigor it had at 35.
Frankly, when I'm 70 I hope I can be hooked up with a horny, gape-friendly 45- to 50 year-old woman as hot as Persia Monir looks these days (She's 51? Wow), and a prescription plan for Vitamin V or whatever the miracle boner pill is by then. Maybe Miss Gia Jerkins could be my partner in crime. Although we're close in age I get the sense that as a grandmotherly lady she'll still be up to phone in a young wench to lap at her wrinkly, greyed snatch while the Admiral flogs away uselessly.
My fear is that the Obama years will fuck America so thoroughly that my $5 million buys a few lattes at Starbucks. On the other hand, though, if that comes to pass then a young whore will probably do anything for a bag of potatoes.

Just to play devil's advocate for a moment...
Have you thought about what type of job you would enjoy doing so that it doesn't feel like such a rat race and you can make a paycheck too?
Just an example, but:
if you think you'd like to take cooking classes, would you be interested in being a cook?
if you enjoy going to the Dojo, what about starting your own gym or martial arts school or working at one?
I remember when I was in the military there were many guys who didn't want to re-enlist, but who had been in the military since they were teenagers and had never learned how to live on their own and were too scared to get out.
When I first got out, I worked construction and was surrounded by guys who hated their jobs, but didn't have an education and were making very good money and just stayed for the paycheck.
Everybody has heard of prisoners who have spent so much time in prison they have become "institutionalized" when in reality it is just a case of fear mixed with low self esteem (or even worse--simply no imagination).
I promise you that if you can discover whatever it is in life that you enjoy doing, not only will life stop feeling like a rat race, it will give you self respect, a feeling of accomplishment, and a more fulfilling, enjoyable, and happy existence than simply passing time until you die.

I barely skimmed the responses except for Bornyos so here's my.02.
My whole deal is to not owe anybody anything. I buy my cars, I use a credit card but never carry a balance, and I'm like 20 months away from owning my house(5 yr deal).
Unfortunately for me I have to keep working for the next 10 yrs for 2 reasons.
- Our healthcare system is absolute shit so I need my employer to supplement my familys coverage.
- I need to make enough bank to get my kid through college without dipping into my retirement plan.
No fucken way I'm letting him bear the burden of college loans. That's a fucken sucker bet with no hope of a payout.

But, to answer your question: I would recommend you find something that makes you happy and that also allows you to be productive, and participate. Maybe volunteer work?

Yes, and this is what I hear from folks, debt-free is the way to be. Quite correct.
Traditionally, a 4% draw has been sustainable indefinitly, 5% probably for several decades. Of course, things have been a bit turbulent lately. But, this assumes your capital will be able to grow to adjust your draw for inflation, and pay its own taxes.
Right now, living on the road on $1500/mo. is very easy. This includes vehicle insurance, maintenance, pro-rata on a run around vehicle, entertainment and eating in restaurants, as well as fuel, food, site rent, etc. Living in a fixed location will be very similar, as rent will be more, maintenance and fuel less, but things roughly balance out.
Let's see ... what's rent now for a decent place, nothing fancy? $600/mo.? I spend $100 on my groceries each week, utilities, satellite TV, internet, etc. run another $250 or so, add in vehicle costs and incidentals, and we are between $1500 and $2k.
For a 5% draw, to pay yourself $24k/yr, you will need 24k / 5% = $480k. With $300k, a little balls, and the willingness to go cheap and pick up some temporary part-time work, things look OK.
However, if you start to draw down the capital, it may be next to impossible to replenish it. Things can collapse quickly, as the capital shrinks, and your draw increases with inflation, the percentage increases literally exponentially, and you are trapped in a situation where you are eating your seed corn. It is essential that you have a concrete plan to go the first two, or better, five, years without touching the capital. In my case, it is also essential to have an exit strategy, a way to get off the road and into a sticks and bricks existence again if I choose. Too many folks stuck sitting in a dump, living in a broken RV, because their pension check never lets them have enough for repairs and this month's expenses.
I've run the numbers many times, and many ways. I keep the numbers very loose, but for me, about $20k/yr. will work. I've done some things to help myself now, like my investments in solar, and a campground membership (basically buying bulk campsite rent in advance). So my answer to your question is about $400k. My personal situation is a bit more complicated ...

I've been there, done that, am still doing it, and will enjoy it until 2012. Then life will get even better.
I think you are jealous because I have a way to really enjoy what life really is, while you try to define life as your professional life, because you are trapped there. Oh, I meant to get trapped in this, it feels good. Oh, if you want to do something different after your 35 years of working, you are escaping from life as I define it. Oh, I wouldn't want to travel to wonderful natural places in the luxury of a new RV and go hiking, 4WDing, and motorcycling in huge national forests, that's childish. And I don't want to hear about meeting and making so many friends in all these great places, because Chuck meets them in meetings, and I don't understand that, either. And I wouldn't want to try to value myself any other way than the way I was trained, by answering the question, "So, what do you do?" by reporting my vocation.
Maybe Bornyo is right. Ya'll just don't understand this. I thought you would, and Fenris seemed to think so, too. I would have thought porn fiends would have a proclivity for dropping out of the grind to live leisurely, but I guess I'm wrong. All I know is I see a whole lot of joy over on the fulltime RV forums, and about half of them would trade their current financial situation for paid-up stuff, decent health insurance, and $400k in a jiffy.
It scares me on a deeper level that when someone asks about how to do this, people are so quick to defend the system that keeps the widgets cranking out and the corporate coffers filled, and suggest that even the thought of freedom is somehow so vile it means you have failed as a human being. I would have thought porn people would have enough open mindedness to see there are other paths than nose to the grindstone until you work yourself to death, desperately trying to wring self-worth out of some employment that can evaporate at the whim of some mid level manager.

I'm not going to live in a RV at whatever age you can come up with. Not my thing. But there are more ways to enjoy one's freedom.
At the moment, I have a financially care-free life. I can do what I want to do and find it pretty fulfilling. Of course, there are moments that I'd rather lead a different kind of life, but I lack the means (both financially and otherwise) to achieve those things. Instead of getting frustrated, I use my energy on the things I can achieve and try to be content with that.
This works wonderfully for me and I plan to continue this for as long as I have the possibilities. If there comes a time that I'm not so well-off anymore or want to re-start my 'professional' career, I'll see what I do then. I'm not planning much further ahead than 6-12 months.

There's no getting out... too many variables and all. Kids, inheritances, elder care. Every picture is different and every frame is skewed.
That being said..My living nightmare is to be trapped in a one room living structure on wheels with my wife and kid and all that it entails. Think murder/suicide combined with the dc beltway sniper and you could almost begin to imagine the payout. I need my space. Innocent people need my space.

Knowing you have some money doesn't divorce you from pride. B's onto something-there simply isn't anything preventing you from hitting eject and getting shot out of the cockpit on a whim.
new jack hustler's "i'll never go broke i've got property' isn't untrue and I had the ability to buy in 2008 despite barely touching things most years so I got lucky.
you'd get bored when you can do things sans the concept of consequence-i bought the carbon enduro and then decided a refurb 2.93x2 nehalem was so close to replacement by the hex's it made sense..
had i had to save and seriously consider dropping 6K on a bike it would have been exciting and a lot more fulfilling. i don't spend much most of the time, but thrift's only aa source of pride until you need to dry clean everything you own and your driveway's got an extra car that's nice enough not to prudently get rid of.
it's all about whether you're cool with making your own fun and challenges or you can get pretty entitled in a strangely unfullfilling way. i'm happy with a kayak and a speargun for weeks at a time, winter's longer than it has any business being.

the thai people are soome of the ugliest races if not the ugliest. maybe myanmar or laotians are competive, cambodians are a solid step up but the combination of looking like a philipino with a quick shot from a flamethrower at their faces combined with the disease and overall cultural repugnance makes thailand deserving of a "carthago delenda est" no fucking loss save for the brits and germans who vacation there to fuck boys on the cheap.

There was a conundrum, a meme, thrown about on the internets recently, having to do with penguins, or icebergs, or something like that. I forget now as i've been drinking, but it came to mind when I came upon this thread just now, with a guy saying that he's leaving, yet lingering around to test the effects of his statement as if there will be a groundswell of remorseful participants begging for his continued company. What in the hell is going on here still?
