^^^Yes, BUT, when they need rescuing because their own stupidity put them and others at risk it's another matter. Since Tiny Torn Gape didn't provide a link to the story, I'm going to guess, based on the location, that the guy was one of the hundreds of numbskulls who think they can swim/dive/go over Niagara falls in a barrel.

^^ I see what you mean and I agree to a certain extent. But wouldn't it be wiser/better/cheaper to start a civil action (as police dept. or fire brigade) to get the costs of the rescue reimbursed?

Recoup the cost in fines as an alternative to incarceration. In any event, there are times an example has to be made, and I think this qualifies.
