Recently, I was stuck in a bar watching some lame entertainment show about various network sitcoms, dramas, late night wars, etc. and I realized that I didn't recognize any of the topics they were discussing.

Are there any good shows left on network TV?

I started watching "Mad Men", and thought it was great, but I watched it on Apple TV, not on network TV. I also LOVE "30 Rock", but I also watch it on Apple TV, not on network TV. I like several shows on pay cable channels that I record to my DVR: "Ramsay's Kitchen Nightmares"(BBC), "Real Time"(HBO), "Entourage" (HBO), but I don't know a single network TV series currently running.

Does anybody still watch network TV? Do you have any favorite shows or do you watch only out of habit? Is there anything currently playing on network TV that is worth putting up with commercials to see?

Only shows I really watch on network TV are The Office and 30 Rock on NBC, and the Fox Sunday night line up of animation.

I often use television to relax. So, I need a few shows to watch, no matter how bad they are.

Kind of watching, "The Michael Vick Project". But, it's annoying because they don't use the TV Guide, so all the re-runs get recorded. Okay series, at least it doesn't insult your intelligence. It just bores you a little.

The Dr. Pinsky group of series on VH-1. I like psychology and those do a little of that.

Nova and Frontline. Love it when Frontline comes out with an episode that explains a current political topic I don't know much about. But, new episodes don't come out frequently.

I like the Ramsay reality shows, but they've kind of gotten old, predictable.

Fox's Special Report and PBS Newshour I at least fast forward through every day. I'll check who the guest is on Charlie Rose.

I like Ramsey and a few others you listed. As far as network goes as close as I get is Sheens syndicated show. I like Charlie.

I haven't had any kind of TV in years. The set is basically just a monitor for my DVD player and video games. Being home only two or three evenings a week kinda makes have any type of TV, free or cable, kind of a waste.

Gordon J. Ramsay, OBE is my role model. He has been since before I ever even knew he existed (or should I say his style) and it has nothing to do with his cooking.

I would suggest watching "Boiling Point" a British documentary about his attempt to obtain three Michelin stars, or "The F word" or early BBC productions of "Ramsay's Kitchen Nightmares" (before he came to the US) over the current "Hell's Kitchen" series, but they're all good to me.

It's not so much that I watch TV. I leave it on a lot of the time for background noise that isn't distracting.

I find myself working on papers that involve focus to the point that I can't play music that I enjoy so I just leave the TV on.

I do not get cable. In Toronto I can pick up 10 or so stations with the television alone. That is plenty.

A few days ago I was writing code while "watching" a session of parliament. That sort of TV viewing is all I do.

Good eats is decent, Alton is brilliant. And I like Bourdain too. Anthony is fucken awesome and the show is just so cool to kick back and take in. He really does cover the culture and cuisine of so many countrys with a unique perspective while dropping many many stoner and porn refs.

Same here. I catch up on shows on Hulu. And tv at other people's houses is more exciting.

I never heard of this series till this thread and decided to download it. Its like someone stole parts of every cheezy 80s action show then put them all together to make one giant crapshow for people with an average IQ of 85. I think marathoning this show and "Time Trax" together should be used as a form of punishment instead of prison.

This was a great fucking tip. Not quite as intense as classic HBO series like Oz and the Soprano's, but close. And, this series has got more comedy in it than those shows ever had.

They've been re-running series 1 and 2 leading up to the premiere of season 3. It's all I been watching on TV since Guapo posted it. Guapo, if you've got more shows, Please!!

Agreed. Hooked since the 1st episode. Who knew the dorky Dad from "Malcom in the Middle" had chops like this? Great fucking show.

Sitting down to "The Pacific" now on DVR.

After my GrandDad died I got a Jap flag to hang up in my room. He had kept it in his closet along with a box of medals and several other "souvenirs" (like a pack of cigarettes taken off a dead Japanese soldier--I smoked one once, years later, and was disappointed how they just seemed like regular stale cigarettes). I guess nobody else wanted that junk and the rest of the family thought a pre-teen boy might appreciate it even if he didn't understand what it meant. I pinned the medals on the cloth flag and hung it over my bed with his framed Marine Corp honorable discharge certificate and a picture of General D. MacArthur he kept in the hall although nobody knew why; and some were secretly very happy to be rid of.

I was always a bit disappointed that he was in the Pacific rather than Europe--where Hollywood and the rest of the American public consciousness seemed to be and where everybody thought about when they thought of WWII. I have thought a million times why that is the way it was/is.

No, it came about because I use Apple TV or Netflix over my regular cable TV service about 90% of the time. If I find something I like on TV, the first thing I do is look to see if it is available on AppleTV, netflix, or DVD. If it isn't available anywhere else, I'll DVR it on cable as a last resort. Other than things like the Oscars or the Superbowl, regular CABLE TV is passe.

I probably watch too much TV. At least it's DVR'd so I can get everything I need to get done before gelling out in front of the tube. That's what I tell myself, speaking of defense mechanisms:

"Justified" on FX was OK--- not spectacular, but I'll watch the next episode.

But coupled with a DVR, still more efficient (no streaming issues).

Sun: 60 Minutes, Fox "Animation Block" (though I often hate myself for it). And now, BREAKING BAD! Check out the Adult Swim sched, and most likely, call it a night.
Mon: No Reservations, House, 24, Damages, Daily Show/Colbert ("DS/C").
Tue: DS/C (on Com HD, it's 3 hours ahead of time), Lost, Southland (last weeks ep "U-Boat" was best ever), Justified.
Wed: the dead zone...there's nothing...a good night to prepare shopping lists and catch up on anything missed...DS/C at some point...maybe watch a movie that I purchased or recorded.
Thu: Community/Parks & Recreation/The Office/30 Rock and then, was Archer, but now, nothing...DS/C.
Fri: set the DVR for Kitchen Nightmares and Caprica.
Sat: nothing.

+1 for Breaking Bad. just incredible. this thing has Lou written all over it- that criminal element crawling around out there among homes & gardens, trying to blend in and disappear.

bryan cranston is the best actor on TV right now period. who knew the dad from malcolm in the middle had it in him, placing mankind in the hands of a monster, an ogre gorging on discord and despair- everything he touches. the new twin mexican terminators are cool, if contrived, and the decency to let Walt finish his shower before splitting his skull with the stainless steel longhandle axe was gracious. i like the new mexi cartel angle.

i hear lots of buzz about the Saul Goodman character but my money is with Dean Norris as Hank Schrader- a lot of subtleties there and probably the most fun of all to watch in his dual performance as DEA agent slapping narco's around like children, and underneath, a guy with a serious array of triggerpoints, suffering from PTSD and married to a clepto cunt. the way he looks at her is like "i'd bury you alive if i weren't in the grips of an all consuming sadness, so i'll make jokes instead."

it's good times.

I'm pretty much on the Gunker schedule. Some oh his I can pass on. I've watched Lost 4 seasons and I really don't give a shit this season. A pox on all their houses.

Big Love and Weeds are both great. I love how both are completely different shows from when they started.

24, but I'm glad to see it coming to an end. The writing has gotten a tad sloppy.

Modern Family is fucking fantastic. I know the geeky dad is supposed to be the breakaway character, but I love the whole ensemble. I love my homos flaming and Cameron fits that bill. And Al Bundy's bride...daddy loves Latin cleavage.

Sons of Anarchy works for me. I love shows that start a storyline, but don't always give the storyline a payoff. Loose ends are never all tied up in real life. Plus there's a ton of undercurrent stuff that just smolders, then suddenly pops up to jab you in the stomach. Great acting, great writing.

I'm there for Justified. The Shield guy and the Girl Next Door (jondra?) guy are a great Cane and Abel combination. To have one of the two major characters take a gut shot in the first ep, well, it can only be a monkey driven rocket ride from there.

Plus there are some great docs on the "learning" type channels. Altho, I'm starting to get concerned that the History Channel is kind of turning into MTV? Remember when they used to show these things called "music videos"? And now they don't. HC seems to be going in the same direction. What does Ax Men have to do with history? Show me another fucking doc on how Washington and Jefferson buggered young apprentice Masons.

And Breaking Bad. Best show on tv. The characters are really out of the box. Cranston is the perfect combination of utter desperation, utter despair, but with a mix of certainty that this will all work out in the end. Somehow. But it won't. It just can't. I agree the brother in law will be the epicenter of how it all comes crashing down. But who knows? Walt just may pull it off. Haven't seen ep 3 yet, so I'm really hoping he doesn't actually get his head cracked with an ax handle.

I think the bigger question is does anyone go to the movies anymore? I think the last movie I saw was Book of Eli, mostly because a bunch of us went to it at the dollar theater. TV's where it's at right now. Really groundbreaking stuff (OK, I know there's more shit than good, but the good is really great), great writing, great characters, epic acting. And I can sit on my couch with my feet propped up, a frosty homebrew in one hand, my new Stewie pipe in the other. What's not to like?

I downloaded SoA at the recommendation of a friend. I liked the first season. I'll even admit I got wood over the rape of Peg Bundy. The second season just got gayer and gayer. The last episode with all the bikers being all queer on the dock over the boat zooming away with the baby pretty much ensures I won't be watching the show again.

Weeds lost me when she started burning coal...I tried to watch again because I like pot but then there was almost no herb in the show and she was smoking burritos. :gag:

Glad to see all the love for Breaking Bad.

Now, to clarify the end of ep 2 for Barry...[SPOILERS]

The bald "cleaner*" guy has staked out the house at the behest of the attorney who wanted the estranged wife watched. He know the very-valuable asset Walt is in the house as Walt interrupted his bugging of same house.

He observes the twin Mexican cartel assassins enter the house (he must know this from their boots (interestingly enough, in this week's "Southland", cartel assassins were also identified by their boots...cowboys, with steel toes)).

He calls the attorney (assumed, off camera) who then calls the character played by Giancarlo Esposito who is some kind of loud factory.

Then, the two assassins who are politely waiting for Walt to finish their shower receive a phone call. The caller ID says "Pollos" which, of course, is Giancarlo's front restaurant, last seen offering Walt $3,000,000 to manufacture again.

When Walt steps out of the shower, the assassins are gone, their revenge prerogative trumped by Walt's potential value to the higher ups in the drug trade.

All of this happened in about 5+ minutes, with very little words spoken...

*-I call him this, because in Season 2, ep 13, he "cleaned" up the apartment where the girl O'D'd (with some help from Walt).

I watched it last night. Was right on the edge of my seat for the final minutes. I had to rewatch it, because I thought it was Walt's phone that rang.

So, the twins steal peasant clothes, but once the reach Los Estados Unitos, the go buy new shiny pimp suits. Love it.

Best show on tv.

So on the advice of XPTers I downloaded the first season of "Breaking Bad" on apple TV. I've only seen the first 3 episodes, and it is OK so far, but they blurred out all the nudity and cut out the curse words! What the fuck?

It's AMC/basic cable, so they have to hedge their bets.

I thought, with the most recent ep (Season 3, Ep 3) that they would finally unleash the F-word (in the context that "I had revenge sex with...") on basic cable, given the build-up tension and relative quiet...

instead, you had "I f___ed" [him]. Specifically, the "f" and the "ed" were audible, but in between, the audio was silenced...

Since Skylar is not a real person, and is a character in a story written by men, don't you wonder what it is they were trying to say? Was the writer's goal really only to make you hate one of his characters or is there something more going on?

I understand that she's a character. I don't think the point is to just make the viewer hate her. I like shows that that give the characters more depth than simply good or bad. Calling her a cunt, and saying Walt was just a good Joe was lipping off. The moment that she so calmly told him she fucked her boss was something everyone, man or woman, has experienced. The person you love, that you know loves you, drops a cruel bomb on you, simply for the sake of cruelty. We've all recieved it. And we've all been the one to give it. Maybe not to that degree, or maybe to a greater degree. The deeper thing that's goling on is the fallout from comments and actions that can't be taken back. Of everyone. Walt's actions (the meth cooking, the lying about how his medical bills were being paid the two phones..everything),her aqctions, Jese's actions, the girlfriend's dad's actions. All the fallout from all of the actions by people who are trying desperately to hold on to their morality, as it keeps going further and further from their reach. For me, that makes the best episodic television. It's a soap opera format, with better and more realistic writing. I guess it's my stories.

I'm still catching up... It's good. At first I was all pissy about it not being on HBO or whatever but after a few episodes I realized how good it was without all the Deadwood type profanity and Mob Scene type graphic hits. I'm at the desert meth house gas chamber episode so maybe stfu and throw out a few *spoiler* alerts unless you'd really like to have a miserable time here for the next 6 months.

Good call Guapo...

Sorry if I did a spoiler.

I was kind of the same way. A bit pretentious about the Sopranos because they could show boobs and say "fuck". I'm a firm believer that tv is the new movies, if that makes sense. The envelope has gotten pretty far out there in basic cable land, so for some talented writers to push the envelope, it makes for some really good stuff.

Glad you're enjoying it.

I never thought of it that way till you said it Roger, very good. There's nothing original on the big screen is there?. Death sex drugs and violence on cable is leading the way it seems. Segway into the Nhl playoffs btw for the three of us that aren't gay. Go Leafs...

The problem I have is when the writer puts the word "Fuck" in the script, the actors say the word, the director films the word being said... and then it is bleeped. Why? Either say the word or don't, but don't say it and then don't say it.

Same thing with the shot of the topless woman leaning out of the window and having her tits pixilated. Just don't film it at all.

I agree. I mean, when it's a movie to tv, I understand it, because it's what was filmed was filmed. They don't shoot a hardcore then shoot a cable version. But when it's made for tv, it's not attractive (wrong word, but it's 4:45am and I'm coming off a major panic attack). I figure it's either a way of thumbing their noses to Standards and Practices, either for their own artistic integrity or to seem to be rebellious. Or a way of making it seem like they're standing up to S&P and the network. Who knows? It's just wrong tho.

Frank... as far as breaking bad goes.. apply yourself for once, it will pay off.

The Pacific.... I think it fucken sucks. SUCKS. I'm not impressed or even compelled to see what happens next. Dead slopes just aren't that interesting and I mean no offense to anyone that's killed one or is related to someone etc..

I'm there for the Pacific. It's not Band of Brothers, or Private Ryan (I always, ALWAYS, bawl like a baby at the end of Ryan...did just last Sunday, I think it was), but I like it. The war in the Pacific never really got the play the war in Europe did, which I think is a major shortfall of our edumacation system. My uncle was a SeaBee all over the Pacific, and as a kid I loved going through his scrapbook from that time. Hanks seems to be the national history teacher at the moment, so I'm pretty well down with any of his huge budget epics.

No, you're forgetting I don't forget simple shit like that.

1) I was expressing my disappointment over a particular stylistic choice not ignorance about how business works.

2) The writers/director/producer/whomever seem to agree with me since the cursing and nudity has disappeared completely. The beginning of the first season had obviously gratuitous and unnecessary nudity and language issues, while the later seasons left out any foul language or even nudity that was appropriate to the story line (e.g. sex scenes integral to the story line had NO nudity and were not shown).

3) If the idea was to film a "director's cut" for DVD sales, and punish the core audience along the way with pixelation of nudity and bleeps of cursing, as the series got more critical acclaim, more awards, and renewed for more seasons by the network, you would expect to see more occurrences of bleeped speech and pixelated nudity, not fewer; which is the actual case.

Whatever was going on in the first season, it had absolutely nothing to do with possible DVD sales, and subsequent seasons have improved. I am all for playing Devil's advocate, but come on that was a pretty weak attempt by somebody not familiar with the series they were talking about, hmmm?

I've seen the first two seasons and have watched the last couple of episodes of this season. But you're right, I didn't understand that you were referring to the scenes from the first season, I thought you meant the way the 'I fucked Ted' line was cut in this season. I didn't even notice the nudity and cuts in the first season that you mentioned, maybe because I watched them on DVD?

I've downloaded Breaking Bad and it reminds me of There Will Be Blood. There is one actor who is pulling off a great performance that draws you in and the rest is mediocre crap.

Kick-Ass = the new gold standard for "two hours you'll never get back". neither self parody nor love-to-hate or ever "so bad its good."

everyone ate up Superbad for succeeding in spite of itself and by accident, but i groaned at the inevitability of nerd genre and bad imitations to follow. if there's one thing hollywood knows how to do it's bleeding new concept dry, and Kick Ass takes what is "Spy Kids" at its core and attempts to wrap shit in a Superbad wrapper, delivering an R-rated kid's movie that twelve year olds can't see and adults wish they hadn't.

Well that does it for me... permission to use parts and pieces of that to drop kick people back into reality?. It will be very subtle and you'll hardly know it happened.

The comic book/anime/geek part of me wants to see Kick-Ass in the worse way but in my heart I know the movie is gonna suck ass because the trailers are too good for the movie not to suck ass. Sadly, the biggest draw to this movie is going to be the violent, potty mouthed loli, Hit Girl. Serioulsy, they have an 12 year old girl running around in various costumes being violent and saying fuck, cunt and cock. The closet pedos are going to be all over this flick like white on rice.

Hit Girl Trailer

The butterfly knife she asks for is a $1000 discontinued balisong.

The song playing in the trailer is a cover of the Tra La La song from the Banana Splits Show.

It's worth it. Get the fuck out of the house and see it. Very cool film. I'm getting that shit on blu-ray without a doubt...!
(and yeah, the little girl totally steals the movie)

The American Family Association hasn't issued it's standard movie/book burning plea yet but just wait till Fox news gets behind this big time.

Funny, cause that's how I'd describe Kick-Ass too. Any scene without Hit Girl killing and cursing is blandcity.

I watched the Champions League semi-final between Inter Milan and Barcelona tonight. Pretty entertaining.

Best episode so far, overall I've found the series to be disappointing.

Also I guess all the Italian-American organizations were to busy bitching about The Sopranos and Jersey Shore to complain when they cast a fucking Puerto Rican as John Basilone.

I looked this up and went to watch an episode because I'm all over the concept. I couldn't do it. I just could not get past the incredibly dramatic narration.

I've caught them all and I'm glad you said that. This series can't hold a candle to "Band of Brothers". Much of the blame has to go to the director, for the dialogue is not well done at all, and yes the casting is less than ideal. I'll still watch it, but it only reinforces how incredible "Band of Brothers" really was.

Absolutely no question that dozens of potentially great shows like this series (though I have never seen this particular series) have been utterly ruined by crap writing and shit directing. I can't blame the voice actor because he is just reading what is handed to him and doing it the way the director tells him to do it.

Shitty writing has ruined many T.V. shows. Personally, I also think it has more to do with why newspapers are failing than "the internet" does.
