I won't mourn the destruction of music labels as they are nothing but parasitic dogshit to begin with. I totally embrace the new age of information freedom where a band can create their own label/release an album them selves with total control and not have to worry about %99 percent of the revenue they earn living like nomads on tour disappearing up some yuppy scum fuck's nose.

And how should young people learn to search for and appreciate all the great music created independently by the bands if everything they hear from the mainstream media is hip hop/r&b?

I've been meaning to start listening to Jazz music for this very reason. It hasn't been infilterated by corporate America, so I'd imagine there's less junk to sift through trying to find the stuff you like.
Haven't done much. Did find Joshua Redman. Very accessible jazz musician for people who are used to (and now tired of) classic rock.

Ask any art history major. They'll tell you.
But, I gotta find stuff that's similar to classic rock to be able to get into it. That's what I'm used to and that's what I understand. Joshua Redman being current. Louis Armstrong's Hot 5's and Hot 7's being more classic examples.

Seriously though, you should check out electric period Miles Davis, Tribute to Jack Johnson is my favourite record of his from that period but the Live at the Cellar box set is pretty great too, but major $$$, but I guess you can probably just download all this shit for free nowadays. Miles is long dead anyway right?
Also check out Love Supreme by John Coltrane, one of the greatest records in jazz but also very riff oriented and accessible.

if it's something particular you're after, search for it. it's available. that's the beauty of the internets. whatever you're in search of is readily available. however, there's a fucking shit load of crap, including what's forced down your throat via terrestrial radio, tv, etc., to search through.
