One of my most favorite authors ever. I ready his stuff (yeah yeah, all three of em) over and over again in high school. RIP and thanks for setting the bar so high. But never fear. Stefanie Meyer and her Twilight series will surely carry the torch for teens.

I don't think they're particularly powerful, except in proportion to their small numbers. There are relatively few kikes in America, but there are 13 rich Jews in the Senate and 43 in the House. It's true that a lot of jewboys are rich and they have a long tradition of using media to secularize/liberalize their host countries out of self-interest. But mostly they're just a nuisance (like roaches and communists).

Catcher is a great book, didn't read any of his others but what I will say is Holden Caulfield would totally hate the porn industry because its filled with more phonies than that school he got expelled from.

In my honest opinion, I think the guy blew his wad with the message of his life, which was to avoid the phonies, naive as it was, and the rest of his work is probably crap. I could be wrong, but I think you smell what I'm cookin'.

Salinger's story and career raise a lot of questions and ideas about the nature of fame in America / the west.
A lot of artists don't have their work appreciated until after they die, so it must be overwhelming to have interest growing in one (or several) of your works at an exponential rate in front of your eyes while you are still alive, letalone when you are young, or at the start of your career.
Salinger's story in particular reminds of me Bill Watterson, of Calvin and Hobbes fame. Guy does his thing, ends public access to it, and then withdraws from public life. Watterson's exit seems to have been accompanied by the idea (discussed in occasional rare interviews he granted) that he had said everything he wanted to say, and left before he outstayed his welcome.
There has to be the thought in these guys' heads that they can't possibly equal this success again, so why even try. Everything after these huge successes would just be anticlimactic, so they just cower away. In my view, I guess this is better than being over-exposed, or releasing junk art because of contractual obligations with a studio or distributor.

If you read some of the books written in the past few years about Kurt Cobain and period when Nirvana was getting recognized and then burst into the spotlight, it is very similar to what Salinger seems to have experienced. Cobain and his band were literally starving, living in squalor in rural apartments in Washington state without enough money, while supposedly signed to their record label and being the next big thing. He is supposedly wearing four or five layers of clothing in the "Smells Like Teen Spirit" music video to cover how skinny they had all become from living that way. Then, once they were fully in the spotlight of their success and the cheques were rolling in, the public / media didn't want to let them go.
Cobain actually quit music after the Nevermind tours, and took up painting at home, turning out tons of these huge canvasses. Based on what I have read, so many people with a vested interest in another album/tour/etc started hounding him into writing songs again, doing another album, etc. That period where he is painting sounds like one of the truly happiest times in his life, and he eventually ended up stepping away from it because of other people who were dependent on him.
There is a quote from him in one of the books about how when you are surrounded with people who depend on you for their livelihoods, you will never be able to get an unbiased opinion from them with regards to anything that may affect their incomes, especially if it could affect them negatively.
Everything else (his marriage, later suicide, etc) aside, some of the interviews with him and the band from before they really hit it big, to the period immediately after, really strike a chord about what it must be like to get everything you thought you ever wanted.

I think Nirvana is one of the most over rated bands in the history of rock but I'll stick up a little bit for Cobain. If you were married to Courtney Love you would be either a junkie, looking for a way to end it all, or all of the above too.
