When I was researching fancy rats as pets everything I read said that they require alot of social interaction to be happy. A single rat will be unhappy. Its was alway recommended to get 2 or 3 rats of the same gender and caring for 2 or 3 isn't any harder than caring for just one and they will amuse each other when you don't have time to interact with them.
