Jean Simmons Dies at 80; Actress Whose Talent Exceeded the Parts She Played

Jean Simmons, the English actress who made the covers of Time and Life magazines by the time she was 20 and became a major midcentury star alongside strong leading men like Laurence Olivier, Richard Burton and Marlon Brando, often playing their demure helpmates, died on Friday at her home in Santa Monica, Calif. She was 80.

The cause was lung cancer, according to Judy Page, her agent.

'All My Children' actor James Mitchell dies

James Mitchell, the stage actor and dancer who was best known for portraying wealthy patriarch Palmer Cortlandt on the soap opera "All My Children" for nearly 30 years, died Friday at age 89.

Mitchell died of pneumonia contracted after a years-long battle with pulmonary disease, according to a statement released by ABC.

His final appearance was January 5 for the show's 40th anniversary episode.

Survivor: Palau Contestant Jennifer Lyon Dies at 37

Jennifer Lyon, who placed fourth on Survivor: Palau in 2005, died at her home in Oregon Tuesday night, PEOPLE has confirmed. She was 37.

The reality TV star was first diagnosed with stage-three breast cancer a few months after she wrapped Survivor, and opted for a modified, radical bilateral mastectomy, followed by courses of chemotherapy and tamoxifen, a drug used to prevent recurrence.

Brother Faces Assault Charges After Nancy Kerrigan's Father Dies

Famed figure skater Nancy Kerrigan's brother Mark is facing assault charges after an alleged altercation with their father, who died on Sunday, according to reports.

Mark Kerrigan, 45, has been charged with assault and battery with a dangerous weapon on an elderly person and causing serious bodily injury. A police report filed in court says the son attacked his father during an argument about whether he could use the phone.

Teddy Pendergrass, R&B Soul Singer, Dies at 59

Teddy Pendergrass, the Philadelphia soul singer whose husky, potent baritone was one definition of R&B seduction in the 1970s but whose career was transformed in 1982 when he was severely paralyzed in an auto accident, died on Wednesday night in Bryn Mawr, Pa. He was 59.

His death was confirmed by his publicist, Lisa Barbaris, who said Mr. Pendergrass had been treated for colon cancer since August at Bryn Mawr Hospital and had suffered many complications.

'Bonanza' Star Pernell Roberts Dies at 81

Pernell Roberts Jr, who played the introspective eldest son of wealthy rancher Ben Cartwright on the hit TV western "Bonanza" and went on to star in medical drama "Trapper John, M.D.," has died. He was 81.

Roberts died at his Malibu home on Sunday of pancreatic cancer, said his spokesman, Richard Stone.

Carl Smith, Country Music Hitmaker, Is Dead at 82

Carl Smith, the dapper singer who ranked among the most popular country hitmakers of the 1950s, died on Saturday at his home in Franklin, Tenn., just outside Nashville. He was 82.

He had recently suffered a stroke and had been in failing health, according to Keith Bilbrey, a close friend and former announcer on the Grand Ole Opry.

In 1952 Mr. Smith married June Carter, a fellow Opry member, with whom he had one child, the singer Carlene Carter. The couple divorced in 1956, after which Mr. Smith left the Grand Ole Opry to star in a touring revue sponsored by Philip Morris, the cigarette maker. Also featured on the show was the singer Goldie Hill, to whom Mr. Smith was married from 1957 until Ms. Hill’s death in 2005.

Salvatore "Big Pussy" Bonpensiero (Sopranos episode 1.01 - episode 2.13)

The son of Lino Bonpensiero,[1] Salvatore Bonpensiero started out as a cat burglar, and was affectionately known as "Big Pussy" because of this early career. It is also very likely that he started out solely with the nickname "Pussy," then he got the nickname "Big Pussy" so as to avoid confusion with another crew member, "Little Pussy" Malanga. The name confusion is referenced in the first episode when Tony's confidante Herman Rabkin mistakenly believes that Junior plans to whack Big Pussy Bonpensiero. Tony corrected Hesh by saying that Junior planned to whack Little Pussy Malanga; that if Junior was to attempt an attack on Big Pussy that would result in an automatic mob war. This served to show Bonpensiero's high status in the Soprano crew and his closeness to Tony. He also ran an auto body shop with his brother Edward "Duke" Bonpensiero. He married his wife, Angela in 1976. He was an associate of "Johnny Boy" Soprano, whom he supported during the unrest of 1983. Bonpensiero was made some time after this and acted as a soldier in the Soprano crew from then onwards. He remained loyal to the Soprano family and backed Johnny Boy's wishes to have his son, Tony Soprano, become capo of the crew following Johnny Boy's death in 1986. Bonpensiero worked alongside other longtime Soprano soldiers Paulie "Walnuts" Gualtieri and Silvio Dante throughout his career in the Mafia. Following the death of the elder Soprano, Bonpensiero also took on Johnny Boy's tradition of dressing as Santa Claus and giving out presents to local children at Satriale's meat market at Christmas time.

Bonpensiero was a kind-hearted man who doted on his wife Angie and their three children, and was a long-time friend of Tony's. However, the money he made from the mob was not enough to raise his three children and put them through college (at Villanova) and he began trafficking in heroin on the side. Soprano, his capo, and Jackie Aprile Sr., then acting boss of the family, were aware of his sideline and urged him to stop dealing. Aprile had said to Big Pussy that if he was in need of money he could come to him. It is unknown why Bonpensiero refused the financial help of his boss, although fear of being indebted to his boss or personal pride could be an explanation.

It was around this time that he was caught by the FBI and given the choice of either working for them as an informant against Tony Soprano and his mob family or facing the possibility of 30 years imprisonment to life in prison. Given Bonpensiero's middle adulthood, even the concept of facing the minimum thirty years in jail would have been an effective life sentence. He agreed and was assigned FBI Agent Skip Lipari as a handler — he was revealed as an informant in the episode "Do Not Resuscitate."

In various flashbacks to 1995 it is shown that Bonpensiero was instrumental in organizing a sit-down between Junior Soprano and Acting Boss Jackie Aprile. He traveled to Boca Raton to persuade Junior to return to New Jersey and settle a trucking dispute he had got into with Aprile. He was suspiciously late for the actual sitdown and blamed health problems with his comare's mother. He arrived to the Christmas celebrations that year already in his Santa suit and appearing drunk. He became angry when Gualtieri hugged him, quizzed Soprano about business and almost got into a fight with Christopher Moltisanti. Soprano later remembered these events and decided Bonpensiero must have turned informant shortly before this. This is proven wrong in the episode "Do Not Resuscitate" (season 2) when Agent Skip Lapari said to Pussy "you been with us (the FBI) since '98".

In 1999 Bonpensiero was an essential part of the Soprano crew's operation and was exposed to a number of things he could have reported. He intimidated a debtor into starting up Hesh Rabkin and Soprano's HMO insurance scam. He also helped associate Christopher Moltisanti dispose of the body of Emil Kolar — killed in a dispute over the crew's Tri-Borough Towers garbage routes. As the crew's car expert he was assigned to retrieve a car stolen from Tony's son's (A.J. Soprano) teacher — he found the thieves and kidnapped them but the car had already been chopped. He came up with a novel solution — steal a car of the same model and repaint it. He was present when Soprano and the other capos discussed their problems with new figurehead acting boss, Junior. When indictments were threatened he fled and burned papers in his back garden — perhaps a sign that he was not co-operating fully.

Later that year he was arrested at a card game run by Soprano family capo, Jimmy Altieri. He tried to escape but threw his back out and was caught on the corner of the block (he was later criticized for breaking the Mafia's policy against physically running from the authorities). He was quickly bailed out by Angie but was confined to his house popping pain killers. Shortly afterward, dirty cop Vin Makazian told Soprano he had a rat in his organization and pointed the finger at Bonpensiero. Soprano assigned Gualtieri to see if he could feel out where Bonpensiero's loyalties lay by checking him for a wire, even authorizing him to kill his old friend if he saw one with his own eyes. Soprano was obviously distressed to have to ask Gualtieri to do this to a trusted member of the crew. However, his orders were cut-and-dry, that if Gaultieri did not see a wire, he was not to do the hit. Gualtieri then surprised Bonpensiero with a trip to a bath house, where he refused to undress and left — blaming high blood pressure. This served to heighten his crew's suspicions, but meant Paulie had to abide by the letter of the law of Tony's orders, since no wire was physically sighted, Paulie could not eliminate Pussy. After this unnerving experience, he disappeared. While he was away, Gualtieri took over his collections and the crew killed Altieri (believing him to be an FBI informant), taking the heat off Bonpensiero as the crew figured Jimmy was the "rat".

He resurfaced at Soprano's home in 2000 claiming to have been in Puerto Rico getting treatment for his bad back from an acupuncturist. When reporting to Lipari after the meeting, Bonpensiero lied about Soprano; showing a reluctance to give anything up. He was left out of the crew's trip to Italy to discuss exporting stolen cars with a local mafia family. While meeting Lipari in a distant party goods store, he was spotted by an Elvis impersonator and acquaintance named Jimmy Bones. Lipari reassured him that they had handled it well. However, Bonpensiero later went to Bones' house and murdered him with a ball-pin hammer for fear of being revealed.

Since his return, he and his wife had been having trouble and she discussed leaving him with Carmela Soprano, who dissuaded her because of their Catholicism. Angie settled for sleeping in separate bedrooms.

Upon his return from Italy, Soprano re-organized his crew — Gualtieri would be a capo now that Tony was acting boss, Dante would become Tony's consigliere, and new addition Furio Giunta would be on an equal footing with Bonpensiero despite his years of long service. Bonpensiero was obviously distressed at the new order, openly hostile to Giunta and complained to Lipari that "this thing of ours" turned into "this thing of mine." His reservations about informing on Soprano began to dissipate.

Lipari persuaded Bonpensiero to wear a wire to A.J.'s confirmation, but he spent most of his time upstairs with A.J. telling him that his father would do anything for him instead of talking business. He ends the evening sobbing in the bathroom, still trapped in an impossible situation.

Following Moltisanti's shooting by associates Matthew Bevilaqua and Sean Gismonte, Bonpensiero fell back into his loyal soldier role; he tracked down the escaped Bevilaqua, phoned Soprano, met him at Satriale's to tool up and took him to get the traitor. They drew out the murder, talking to the frightened upstart for a while before unloading their weapons into him. Soprano took Bonpensiero for dinner afterward, and it seemed to be just like old times. When Lipari called Bonpensiero, saying a witness to Bevilaqua's shooting identified Soprano and "a second, husky figure," he flatly denied any involvement. Lipari chose to believe him but pressured him to get a confession from Soprano on tape. The FBI's murder case fell apart when the witness withdrew his statement after realizing whom he had identified.

Bonpensiero eventually began to co-operate and gave Lipari information on Soprano's stolen airline ticket scam. Lipari said that Bonpensiero had a case of Stockholm syndrome when he suggested that he could work in law enforcement once he finished helping the FBI build their case. Bonpensiero began recording notes and tailing members of his crew. He ended up in a car accident in an unrequested "stake-out" gone wrong.

Soprano eventually abandoned the blinding affection he held for Bonpensiero and realized his old friend's betrayal after a portentous dream where Bonpensiero appeared as a fish and told him that he had known all along. Soprano decided he had to be sure, so he visited Bonpensiero's home to search for evidence while Silvio distracted him. Soprano found a wire and had Bonpensiero meet him on the pretense of checking out a new boat. Soprano, Dante and Gualtieri confronted their former friend once they got out to sea and got him to admit that he had informed on them. Bonpensiero claimed that he had been acting as a double agent as a strategy to feed misinformation to the FBI. Soprano, Gualtieri, and Bonpensiero had some Tequila. Dante came down into the cabin and Bonpensiero realized that he would not make it off the boat alive and requested to not be shot in the face. Paulie Walnuts told Bonpensiero, "You were like a brother to me" before Soprano opened fire. Paulie and Silvio also shot at Bonpensiero. They didn't hit him above the neck. Paulie took some jewelry off Pussy's body and the three bagged him up, weighed him down and threw him overboard. All three have since been haunted by the memory of their old friend's betrayal and murder.

Bonpensiero was survived by his wife, Angie, and children, Matt, Kevin, and Terry. He is also survived by his illegitimate son, Joey LaRocca, as revealed in the videogame The Sopranos: Road to Respect. Angie inherited the body shop, which she co-owns with Salvatore's younger brother, and continued his involvement with the DiMeo Crime Family. Although Tony was at first hostile to Angie because he believed she was scamming Carmela for money, Carmela has seen Angie struggling. Carmela's insistence has changed Tony's attitude towards Angie, and he has referred much of his crew and other people to the Bonpensiero body shop.

Zelda Rubinstein, Clairvoyant in ‘Poltergeist,’ Dies at 76

Zelda Rubinstein, a 4-foot-3-inch character actress best known for playing the indomitable ghost-purging psychic in “Poltergeist,” died on Wednesday in Los Angeles. She was 76 and lived in Los Angeles.

The cause was complications of a heart attack she had two months ago, her agent, Eric Stevens, said. No immediate family members survive.

R.I.P. Thaao, believed to be the oldest Andean condor in captivity

A Connecticut zoo says an Andean condor believed to be the oldest one living in captivity has died at nearly 80 years old.

Thaao (TAY'-oh) arrived at the Beardsley Zoo in Bridgeport in 1993 after living most of his life at the Pittsburgh Zoo. He was the only endangered animal at the zoo to be born in the wild.

A necropsy proved inconclusive.

The zoo says an Andean condor lives to about 50. The zoo believes Thaao was one of the original animals to have been tracked using a breed registry, a list of the known individual animals in a breed.

Biologists estimate that there are only a few thousand Andean condors in the wild.

Zoo director Gregg Dancho says Thaao was an ambassador for conservation and the zoo.

Author J.D. Salinger, whose novel Catcher in the Rye is considered one of the most beloved in American literature, died Wednesday. He was 91.

The reclusive author died of natural causes at his home in Cornish, N.H., his son said in a statement released by Salinger's literary representative. He had lived for decades in self-imposed isolation.

Salinger earned his place in literary and pop culture history with his 1951 novel about rebellious teenager Holden Caulfield.

Driver Is Arrested in Fatal Hit and Run on Upper West Side

What began with a report of three men shoplifting over-the-counter drugs from a CVS on the Upper West Side has ended with an arrest for the hit-and-run death of one of the nation’s preeminent documentary editors, whose credits include “The Fog of War.”

The editor, Karen Schmeer, was “one of the greatest editors of her generation,” said Greg Barker, the director of “Sergio,” a documentary for which Ms. Schmeer won an editing award at the Sundance Film Festival in 2009.

Ms. Schmeer, 39, was crossing Broadway at 90th Street just before 8 p.m. on Friday when she was run down by a rented 2010 Dodge Avenger sedan, the police said. She was pronounced dead on arrival at St. Luke’s-Roosevelt Hospital Center.

"Boston Legal" actor dies in Wis. crash

DODGEVILLE, Wis. - An actor from the TV show "Boston Legal" has been found dead near his crashed Jeep in rural Iowa County.

The sheriff's department says 27-year-old Justin Mentell of Waukegan, Ill., was killed when his Jeep went down a steep embankment off Highway 39 near Blanchardville and hit two trees. The crash was called in at about 8:30 a.m. Monday. He was not wearing a seat belt.

Mentell portrayed attorney Garrett Wells on "Boston Legal" from 2005 to 2006. According to the film database IMDb.com, he was also Terrell in "G-Force" in 2009.

The site reports Mentell was born in Austin, Texas, graduated from Waukegan High School and was a former member of the U.S. Junior National Speedskating team.

A message left with his agent wasn't immediately returned Tuesday.

Dick McGuire, whose deft ball-handling and passing wizardry led the New York Knicks to three straight National Basketball Association finals, and who then coached and scouted for them in a Hall of Fame career that lasted more than half a century, died Wednesday in Huntington, N.Y. He was 84.

His death, at Huntington Hospital, was announced by the Knicks. He lived in nearby Dix Hills on Long Island. At his death he was a senior basketball consultant to the team and was about to leave on a scouting trip when he had an aortic aneurysm, his wife, Teri, said.

My girl Hugh died today. She was about a year and a month old.

I loved this hamster, she knew my voice. In a room full of people she could follow me around.

The one time she escaped I found her in bed with me under my pillow.

You need some pets with more longevity. Have you thought about guinea pigs? Or a mule, for that matter.

Thanks B. I think a mule would probably annoy the landlord, plus I am allergic. You might not know I used to do English show riding. I can jump horses and take them through courses.

Guinea pigs I could do. Remember I live downtown in the 5th largest city in economic north america.

Try tarantulas. A female tarantula can live up to 20 years or more while males tend to live 2 - 5 years. Its quite fun to raise a spiderling from the size of your pinky nail up to 5"- 7" leg span.

Yeah I was kidding about the mule, though they live 40 yrs or more. Guinea pigs are good for much longer than a hamster although some of them are very vocal. It is quite possible you could get a guinea pig that would be more annoying to your neighbors than a mule.

Turtles and tortoises live a long time too, though less athletic than a rodent.

I'm sorry for your loss, and am just suggesting maybe you can minimize your exposure to the hardship.

There is an up side to shorter lived pets. I'd love to get another cat, but I can't commit to that long. You can be critter-free in a year or so if you want to make a change. I'm stuck with this stupid dog for the next 10 years.

At one time I was considering Fancy Rats as a pet. They are quite intelligent and fun but have life spans of 2 - 3 years. While I have very little empathy for other people I tend to grow quite attached to dogs and I decided I couldn't handle having 3 little animals of near dog intelligence that would die that fast.

@ chuck if you would like any hamster care advice I would be happy to help. But they are tricky. I have owned one who lived for 2 months and another who lived for 3 years. Its impossible to predict.

@Fiend. I think spiders are really neat but I think also that I feel a bit scared of them. I understand tarantulas can make great pets but it is not for me.

I know a few people who keep rats and they are intelligent and behave as great pets. I am considering getting a pet rat when Biscuits dies.

Also I really do appreciate the condolences from you folks about Hugh. I really appreciate it. I think some of you folks know how strongly I feel about them and if you don't know what I mean. Just think of them as therapy hamsters for me.

When I was researching fancy rats as pets everything I read said that they require alot of social interaction to be happy. A single rat will be unhappy. Its was alway recommended to get 2 or 3 rats of the same gender and caring for 2 or 3 isn't any harder than caring for just one and they will amuse each other when you don't have time to interact with them.
