I've totally heard of tefillin, but I'd be annoyed if I had to sit next to this kid on the plane. I like my in-flight neighbors to be as innocuous and quiet as possible.
I find it "odd" to do ON the plane. But, I've seen them do it. I don't understand why they couldn't do it BEFORE they got on the plane [you're just sitting there anyway] or right after they land.
I haven't "wrapped" since I got sick in 2007, but when I did and had an early flight, I would do the prayers, etc., BEFORE I got on the plane. But, I'm all over the place putting the stuff on. There is NO WAY I could do it in the confinement of an airplane seat/aisle.
Most of the guys I've seen do it, do it in the aisle, or their wife gets up to give them room.
The last time I went down to Florida via JetBlue one of those annoying Lubavitch guys was trying to get all the non-practicing Jews to "wrap" on the plane. He had a very small set and had the people sit next to him. He got 5 people to do it.
I don't know how much that is in "mitzvah tank" points.
