Custody is decided in favor of the _child_, not the parents. I bet she can get a lawyer to argue in court that since she and Jesse had custody at time of divorce, she can retain custody after divorce. Courts strongly favor biological parents, but when the biological parents are not suitable as in this case, well, that's where new case law comes from.

If Janine gets custody then Jesse will owe her child support, and a lot of it. Compared to what Lefty can do for himself she'd be a big meal ticket if she gets custody.

The interesting question is whether Janine can rope Bullock into child support. It would seem impossible, but this is California, and screwier things have come out of their courts.
