I know this is a horrible thing to say, but that's never stopped me before so....... I think the long term effect could be good if they do lose about half a million. The resources left will be split among a lot less individuals. Of course they are of African descent and Catholic so they will breed themselves into the same problems within another generation.

The half of Hispaniola that is owned by the Dominican Republic is a beautiful tropical rain forest with stunning beaches and incredible all-inclusive resort deals. Haiti is a deforested mud/dust pile that looks very much like the poorest parts of Africa in both landscape and behavior.

I did not mean to insinuate that Haiti is some great paradise. I think it's just that 99% of people I know have never even been there and they get this look on their face when Haiti is mentioned like everyone is plague-infested savages. I have only been to Port-Au-Prince so I'm not exactly an expert, but I have friends who were in the PC who had to be dragged out of Haiti bc they loved their time there so much.
Anyway, I agree that America is often lending a hand in situations of dithering poverty only to have it bitten, but what I do know about Haitians/Dominicans is that they are not only grateful for American support, they welcome any visitor with the warmest of arms. Just wanted to say that.

This is the best thing that ever happened to Haiti because it is a begger nation. All is this attention will make 2010 its best year ever in terms of international mooching. It's kind of like how the idle welfare trash of New Orleans hit the jackpot with Katrina. All of the sudden they had FEMA debit cards and trailers on top of what they normally mooched.

I've never been to Haiti, so I don't know a whole lot about their culture, but it's been my experience that individuals are nice and welcoming on an individual level. Some of the sweetest persons I have ever met were from Saudi Arabia and Malaysia. As a culture/people/religion that warm openness does not exist for our people/culture/nation.
I'm not saying we shouldn't offer to help, we should put up a token gesture like the rest of the world is doing, but stop short of offering to go the distance. If we are going to be treated like the bad guys, by the rest of the world, maybe we should start acting like it, and save a little scratch in the meantime.
And I think Pat Robertson is a bottom feeder and doesn't really deserve any attention one way or another because that was really what he was looking for in the first place.

I actually heard Robertson's comments in their entirety today on the radio, and if you listen to them in context they aren't that bad. There's a lot of truth in them, and sympathy too.

On Tuesday, a catastrophic earthquake struck near Port-au-Prince, Haiti. The full extent of the damage is still being assessed, but the death toll -- already in the thousands -- is climbing fast.

It seems like there is some serious reevaluation of disaster relief logistics that needs to be done. In a poor country with poor infrastructure, arriving with gigantic ships and planes isn't going to cut it. If Haitians can build rafts and paddle all the way to Florida, then we ought to be able to get them food and medicine in under 3 days. Especially when there's a naval base less than 200 fucking miles away.
I don't expect the warm n' fuzzies from this board, but it's a small step to feel compassion when you look at images like this

I completely agree, and thank you. Except I do love the Dominican people as well, but there is something "harder" about them. You'll just never know until youre face-to-face with the citizens in their own country, surrounded by their own culture (not you're own) before you'll espouse what they "deserve" or don't.

Toronto is on fucking Haiti overload right now, we have a large Haitian population. And I am just fucking sick of things like walking into a grocery store past a homeless Canadian man and getting asked by the clerks if I want to donate 2 dollars to Haiti.
Canada has a very real homeless problem, the First Nations people especially could use some "relief" money to help set up universities in northern Canada to help relieve their poverty.

To me, funding educational programs for both drivers pedestrians so people stop getting killed every day in my city is a way more worth while cause to donate money to.
Of course without Haitians around I might have a tough time interpreting the meaning of any chickens I find slaughtered on my porch.

Chuck I think you already know I would be happy to pay more taxes to make the streets I walk next to every day safer. Right now there is a semi-successful campaign trying to teach drivers they shouldn't be playing with their electronic devices while they are also driving.

I didn't care about the tsunami victims either and don't see me running to see how the Chernobyl victims are holding up. None are "me".
But, I did very much care about the Katrina victims. And, a great deal of those I saw and sympathized with were melanin rich. Those were Americans, and I see Americans as my responsibility. They are "me".
