There's some truth to that. If you donate to Red Cross etc via credit card the banks will skim (scam?) off a lot of the money. Disasters are very profitable for them.

Verizon, T-mobile and AT&T have said they won't skim off any money donated via text message, but Sprint has not made this promise yet.
