The story is shit, it's true.
That said, you don't see a movie like this for the intellectual aspect, you go for the eye candy. In that department, it delivers. It is without a doubt the next generation of movie making, so hopefully someday soon a good script will get tucked into the flashy new technology.
In the meantime, if you want a good story read a book.

I haven't seen it either. As much as I enjoy movies, I've never been a fan of the blockbuster and I avoid those crowds like the plague.
I may drag a friend to catch a buzz and a matinee at an IMAX 3D before it's gone. All the CGI talk has piqued my interest, which is something I haven't been impressed by. It's grossed a billion dollars in it's first 17 days, more than half of what Titanic has total.

All movies are rehashed shit, and television is just rehashed from that steaming pile. I haven't been to the movies in 3 years and that was so memorable I can't even recall which movie it was. I do however remember sitting through Pochontas on DVD at family members house.  Birth of a Nation based on the Klansman was heralded as technical marvel of it's time. Now it's pretty much an just an embarrassment, this epic adventure of Cameron's will enjoy the same status in the future.

Typical XPT. Everything sucks, everything is terrible, we hate everything.
Why would Avatar be any different?
Avatar, while not the most original story ever, is a very entertaining movie. This isn't Transformers with some hokey bullshit plot and dialogue and cool visuals. This movie has amazing special effects. They are like nothing you've ever seen. The story is predictable, but it moves along and avoids too many cliches.
I've only met one person that didn't like it and he is a miserable prick that shits on everything to make himself feel superior. Wait, maybe he's H2C.....

Ahhhh, did you like it? I bet you liked the new Indiana Jones movie too. I haven’t seen the movie Avatar. I’ve only seen the story line behind Avatar about a hundred fucking times.
We should make a movie about a few quasi-scientists who use manufactured data to convince most of humanity that they are destroying the earth. Add in a few plucky individuals who stand up in the face of criticism and ridicule because they know the truth and are shouting it to everyone. Oh wait I’m seeing that one now.

H2C: There was a long discussion about this film when I went for coffee today. The consensus at the local bodega is that Avatar is a series of special effects with "Last of the Mohicans" as it's plot line. I have not seen either "Avatar" or "Pochontas". I only pass along the info as I heard it to get your take. Even those that were dazzled by the special effects -- in spite of the warmed over plot elements -- had their own list of complaints. There were several complaints that it was too long, especially since it required wearing 3D glasses. Two of the more litigious persons contemplated a class action suit since both feel that they are still having headaches from the combination of length & poor 3D glasses.

Here's the review by the US Conference of Catholic Bishops. Much more reasonable than reported.
BTW this is a good website in case you ever wondered what the Catholic church made of Foxy Brown.
And yes, the review for the original Planet of the Apes is positive. Barbarella, not so much.
