Fox has contacted Maxim's majority stake holder, private equity fund Cerberus, and laid out a five-point plan to save the title and is offering $40 million for the brand. "Either you sell it to me, or by March it will be gone," Fox threatened.
Any idiot who shells out $40 million for Maxim deserves the severe beating he is going to get. I've been in the print media biz and happily sold titles to any moron with a checkbook to take a walk. It's a fools biz.
Sometimes somebody needs to come along and show people how the times have passed them by.
When Ted Turner bought MGM/UA putting him deeply into debt, everybody laughed at him since he couldn't afford to produce any films. When he turned around and sold off the studio and production facilities, they laughed even harder, since all he was left with a catalog of old movies and cartoons (many of which were not even in color!). With the proceeds of this deal he bought up cable TV channels, used his library of old movies and cartoons to make TNT, Turner Classic Movies and The Cartoon Network, and made it a successful business.
Nobody knows what the future will bring, paper magazines may die out, e-readers will likely replace them, but there will always be a market for what Playboy and Maxim used to sell if only somebody could tap them on the shoulder and tell them the market place has moved down the street and they're standing in an empty lot where it USED to be.
Porn is in exactly the same boat. The makers of porn are standing in their shops counting the number of DVDs they sell while all around them the moving vans are boxing up their industry and moving it over the horizon to a place they can't see or comprehend and the looters are shoplifting them blind.
