And Now the End is Near: Maxim in the Same Leaky Boat as Playboy

from www.mediabistro.com - Page Six reports today that Andrew Fox, whose company Track Entertainment operates nightlife directory Clubplanet.com, is predicting the death of lad mag Maxim, unless its publishers go quietly.

According to the gossip column, Fox has contacted Maxim's majority stake holder, private equity fund Cerberus, and laid out a five-point plan to save the title and is offering $40 million for the brand. "Either you sell it to me, or by March it will be gone," Fox threatened.

If Fox is to be believed, Cerberus has shown interest in his offer but kept him at arm's length. But will his plan actually keep Maxim alive?

The men's magazine has had its share of problems this past year. In July, Cerberus took over control of Maxim from the hedge fund Quadrangle Group, which purchased the title, along with the since shuttered Stuff and Blender, from Dennis Publishing two years ago. As Keith Kelly reported at the time, "while Cereberus formally takes control of Maxim, nobody expects it to be a long-term holder."

Maxim's publisher, Alpha Media Group, also lost its CEO, Stephen Duggan, in September and the magazine has seen ad pages drop 35.8 percent during the first half of the year, paidContent reported.

Maybe Fox's five-point plan will be the only thing that can save the magazine:

"My vision is to make Maxim the must-have again, using event production, Web site development, e-commerce and digital marketing and online programming. I am trying to take a strong brand and give it legs for the future. I would take the magazine and all its digital properties and make it into a $300 million business again."

Unfortunately, that $300 million business may not include a print version of Maxim. Fox refused to speculate on the print mag's future to Page Six, but he did cryptically say that, under his oversight, there would be "95 percent more focus on the Web product."

If Playgirl's story is any indication, taking a brand like Maxim online-only might be a kiss of death no worse than keeping it the hands of Alpha Media and Cerberus.

Mogul tells Maxim: Sell or die --Page Six

wow didnt see that coming.....print is dead to most gen x'ers......for that is the reason there is a kindle.

I think it's magazines in general that are dying rather than just sex mags. The print media in this country is circling the drain (see Newsweek).

I could never figure out who Maxim appealed to. People too dumb for Playboy's articles? Pussy-whipped guys who wanted a vapid magazine weakened down to their level, that they could defend to their girlfriends because of how neutered it was?

The photos were lame spreads, usually including clothed shoots of actresses who refused to appear nude -- who needs this when TMZ shows the same chicks on vacation?

Rather than the media gathering wagons and lamenting "another" print media member wounded or falling victim, we need more proactive reporting and analysis on how flimsy so many of these false idols are, and calling them the trash that they are.

As much as I love the internet, there is nothing like buying a magazine and holding it, turning the pages. Pictures just look better in print. On paper. In magazines.

This is in defense of magazines everywhere, even (bleh) Maxim. News magazines, I can justify falling to the wayside in favor of the internet, but magazines that are photo based, irreplaceable.

This is not about print vs. the internet anyway. It's about tons of easily accessible free content all around the internet. Most people won't pay for something they can get for free.

+1.

Right on Gia. Mags still rock cept they are a pain to store. I stare at the fuckin computer screen enough. News is more immediate on the net though I still like reading a newspaper on the train to NYC or a plane to Cali. Maxim type mags are like Playboy w/o the nudity which is pointless tho even with the nudity Playboy is pointless because the pix are airbrushed to the point of absurdity. Plus, on a similar note the Kindle thing for books is also total b.s.

I love the Kindle, but it hasn't been much of a threat to print... YET

We are about 4 or 5 generations (of e-readers) away from replacing most printed material.

I am truly excited for the release of Plastic Logic's new 8.5" x 11" e-reader with full native pdf support in the next few months. I think it will be the beginning of a revolution.

Color currently exists in the far east, but with crappy quality and poor battery life. Once good quality color comes out, it will become the savior of non-technical leisure periodicals from an otherwise certain death.

Any idiot who shells out $40 million for Maxim deserves the severe beating he is going to get. I've been in the print media biz and happily sold titles to any moron with a checkbook to take a walk. It's a fools biz.

Maxim was a good magazine to take a shit with. The blurbs for a quick turd, or a couple page article for a more labor intensive dump. Then I don't know if it was a change in editor or just cost cutting, but it went to hell. I probably stopped reading it all the time in 2004.

Cerberus is the same braintrust that bought Chrysler from Benz. They did a great job there, didn't they?

My step-sister is in the industry; recently laid-off from Conde Nast. The entire industry is dying.

Anyway, the only time I recall actually looking at a Maxim was when Melissa Joan Hart did a pictorial in like 1999 or 2000.

Sometimes somebody needs to come along and show people how the times have passed them by.

When Ted Turner bought MGM/UA putting him deeply into debt, everybody laughed at him since he couldn't afford to produce any films. When he turned around and sold off the studio and production facilities, they laughed even harder, since all he was left with a catalog of old movies and cartoons (many of which were not even in color!). With the proceeds of this deal he bought up cable TV channels, used his library of old movies and cartoons to make TNT, Turner Classic Movies and The Cartoon Network, and made it a successful business.

Nobody knows what the future will bring, paper magazines may die out, e-readers will likely replace them, but there will always be a market for what Playboy and Maxim used to sell if only somebody could tap them on the shoulder and tell them the market place has moved down the street and they're standing in an empty lot where it USED to be.

Porn is in exactly the same boat. The makers of porn are standing in their shops counting the number of DVDs they sell while all around them the moving vans are boxing up their industry and moving it over the horizon to a place they can't see or comprehend and the looters are shoplifting them blind.

^^^ In short, he was shipping for content, because he already had the delivery vehicle. (Don't we see that every day on the web site forum?) That was either visionary-- correctly calling the future-- a lucky gamble, or he had inside knowledge of the regulatory environment to know that cable would be a viable 24 hour a day delivery method. Beautiful moves for sure. AND it allowed him to donate half his proceeds to Hanoi Jane: probably the most anyone has ever paid for a MILF. To be fair, she looks pretty good in

But I digress. Maxim and Cerbrus? I do not think we are getting a repeat.

But I do I hope they make machine guns again. That was a different outfit? Oh well.

Not too much of a visionary. The AOL merger fucked him out of probably half he had left after Jane.

Note on how much of a cunt Jane is. A guy I knew was at a ranch of theirs trying to sell them some horses. While the 3 were on a ride, Jane had to pee. Ted called in to the barn and had someone in a Jeep run some tissues out to them. Jane went behind a bush, peed, wiped, pulled her pants up, and handed the tissues she wiped with to the ranch hand. What the fuck?? I know some of you pervs would dream of it, but your bosses wife handing you piss soaked tissue?

That still isn't as bad as her handing that servicemans note to the NVA.

I have to laugh because after all her posturing as a serious actress and progressive activist, the role she will be best remembered for is a steaming pile of cheesecake.

Any news can be read on the internet before a magazine/paper is even printed. They are outdated at this point. Jesus, there is a reason the telegraph died...

Things become outdated and useless.

The internet 'news' services are reliant on newspapers and news services (like the BBC) for their real reporting and facts. Once they're gone, there won't be any real news left on the web, just a bunch of boneheads with blogs and opinions.

They wont be wiped out but there will be base papers...Wash Post, NY Times, WSJ, Chicago Trib, Miami Her, LA Times and USA Today. Most smaller hometown papers will be runout of existence just as Walmart has killed main street in these sleepy towns. They also will be a small amount within cities of the alternative press rags but with a very small publication rate and very tight demographic numbers.

But I can attest to seeing the demise of the nationals/locals because the Borders/Barnes And Noble/Books-A-Million have stopped carrying them in my local market.

Its merly just a fact of technology....catching up with what funds them....consumers.

To build on that, smaller market papers will take national, human interest, money and sports from the big guys. The smaller papers will publish local and community as unique content. This is the way it basically is now. Also look for the daily to dry up completely and the weekend papers (with the shopping ads and possibly real estate) to be th only thing published on paper.

Mead Westvaco Paper is also another one of their investments I believe. I recall M-W spinning off various marginally profitable mills in the east prior to their acquisitions. They renamed the new division “New Page”. I know one such mill is located in Luke, MD; and I believe another was in Chillicothe, OH (but that was last P.H. Glatfelter that I saw).
