Ohio men sentenced for mailing porn movies to Utah

Two cousins from Ohio who shipped hard-core pornographic movies to Utah were each sentenced Thursday to a year and a day in federal prison.
Sami Harb, 44, and Michael Harb, 35, who operated the now-defunct Cleveland-based Movies by Mail, had each pleaded guilty to one count of selling obscene material.
U.S. Attorney Brett Tolman has called the films violent and extreme and lacking artistic value.
The Harbs faced up to five years in prison. Sentencing guidelines called for 15 to 21 months.
In court documents, defense attorneys Jerry Mooney and Paul Cambria pleaded for home confinement. They characterized the Harbs as hard-working men with families who depend upon them. Sami Harb's wife suffers from a heart condition and Michael Harb's 5-year-old daughter has cancer.
U.S. District Judge Ted Stewart sentenced them to 366 days, followed by three years supervised release.
The investigation began in 2006 when the FBI's Adult Obscenity Task Force in Washington, D.C., got a tip about Movies by Mail, and agents say they were able to buy obscene DVDs on the company's Web site. In March, a Salt Lake City agent placed an online order and three of the movies were deemed to be obscene.
"None of the three films has a plot line," an FBI investigator wrote in a statement detailing the charge. "The films consist entirely of scenes of hard-core sexual acts being performed by multiple men and women."
Postal records show
that Movies by Mail sent 683 packages in 2006 to Utah, 149 of them to Salt Lake City and the rest around the state, according to the complaint.
The Harbs had no role in producing the movies.

This is what I was talking about in the "Obama Muslim" post. It appears that the Feds ordered the DVDs in March 2009, months into the Obama admin - when they shouldn't be wasting their time and taxpayer money on something as stupid as this.
I thought the "change" Obama was going to bring would be good for the adult entertainment industry???

It looks like March 09 to me. I'm chalking this up as an Obama prosecution.

If you're trying to be funny or just stir up shit, it's a stupid topic to do it about. There is plenty to bash Obama about. There's a whole thread of shit dedicated to it in AWOP.
USAs are mostly nominated by the US Senators from their area and tend to follow the Senator's lead. I don't think that this prosecution has much to do with Bush or Obama.

Do you keep track of the DOJ nominations and fights?
Hatch opposed the Obama's appointment of David Ogden, a person who was worked at times to protect our freedom of speech/porn, for Deputy Attorney General of the United States. A sometime porn defender for one of the highest DOJ offices.

Hatch is OBSESSED with eliminating porn.
I really don't want to get in an ridiculous argument on how Obama DOJ could be worse than Bush's/McCain's.
Honestly I don't think Obama cares about protecting porn. Certainly not enough to create a political disaster by interfering with ongoing porn prosecutions in Utah. But, I don't think he cares about it enough to go after it either.
The nomination of someone with Mr. Ogden's credentials for DAG --- a position that, to my knowledge oversees the Civil Rights Division of the DOJ -- is something that wouldn't have happened with Bush or McCain.
And, on this, even Orrin Hatch agrees with me.

He's got his right to his Obama hate, whatever its basis. I'll just stick to facts. If the owner of this porn board were not persecuted by the last administration's over-zealous prosecution, I probably wouldn't have engaged him. Since the ridiculous reactions to the Minnesota Senate race recount on this board, I tend to stay out of politics on XPT. There is no profit in it.  Though I like to pick on Palin. I still can't believe such a moron came so close to being a heartbeat from the presidency.
