An acquaintance I used to drink with at the elks club that was adopted came in one night overjoyed and buying drinks for everyone. He came over to me and happily explained that his biological father had tracked him down after 40 years. I congratulated him and asked what his Bio father was dying from. He stopped and blinked real hard about a half dozen times, cocked his head to the side and asked me how I knew he father was dying. I told becasue most of the time parents who give their kids up for adoption don't look for them unless they are dying, feeling guilty and want to clear their conscience or they need some type of medical treatment that requires a donation from a blood relative for themselves or one of their kids they kept.
New dad had just survived a bypass operation and was suffering liver and kidney damage as well. His doctors told him to expect a year to 18 months. I never heard anything else about it after that. The guy always bought me a drink after that though. Even I felt like a dick when I got home, sobered up and thought about what I said.
