I for one welcome global warming. There are too many humans on this planet and the rise in temperatures is just the earth's way of dealing with the excess population.
On another note if global warming is accelerated by man then it is Al Gore and other ultra-liberals fault. They are the ones who wanted to bring the primitive peoples of Africa and Asia into the modern lifestyle we in the west enjoy. Not to mention eradicating many of the killer diseases that would keep the population in check in those parts of the world. If they only could have kept them riding around in rickshaws things would not be the way they are now.

Can we blame all these Global Warming nuts for the next Ice Age? When the Earth starts a cooling cycle, is a viable remedy going to be burning coal, and setting fire to rain forests? Will we be able to go back to cheap freon in A/C units, so we can expand the holes in the ozone?

The problem is the atmospheric models he's using are way too simple. There are more systems operating in our atmosphere than just the gases he was describing. What effect do those have? How much CO2 does rain wash out, how much is washed out in our oceans?
These go about the direction I expected. Heavy on hype and light on science. Things like recycling, energy efficiency, and cutting down on pollution are all great and worthy goals, in and of themselves. The use of scare mongering tactics by the left in this country however is the reason so many people are becoming skeptical. As demonstrated by their latest commercial: CLICK Divorce the political and economic ambitions of Al Gore from the actual science of climate change and you'll watch many of the skeptics come over. Not me though, I need science to convince me, not hype.

That's why I responded to his in more depth. His models are still to simple to accurately represent our atmosphere. No, I didn't watch them all, I can't spend all day watching youtube. Here is a little something from ABC (Australia) News: CLICK A hacker dumps over a 1000 emails and documents on the internet, from the British climate research center. Purposely misconstruing data is bad enough, doing it in order to dupe the public is tantamount to fraud. Still don't see why there are so many skeptics when shit like this is being perpetrated?

Mr Gore’s office later admitted that the 75 per cent figure was one used by Dr Maslowksi as a “ballpark figure” several years ago in a conversation with Mr Gore.
The embarrassing error cast another shadow over the conference after the controversy over the hacked e-mails from the University of East Anglia’s Climate Research Unit, which appeared to suggest that scientists had manipulated data to strengthen their argument that human activities were causing global warming.

Notice how he completely missed the refusal of the GISS to release its data, even though a FOIA has been filed for some time, or skated over the destroyed data from the CRU. You know, the data they used to actually build their climate models with, those models they are touting as a reason to spend trillions of our dollars.
If they want to see skepticism abate there needs to be more transparency with their climate models. When I see this sort of thing it automatically makes me suspicious and I have to ask myself: Why are the CRU and GISS afraid to open their climate models for peer review? I'm not much on conspiracies in general, but I know it when I smell a rat.
I didn't realize Potholer was a name caller before, that changes the way I thought about him, he loses credibility with me and respect from me, for that alone.

I've read some of the emails and while "they do not read well" and reflect rather badly on some of the CRU people, there aren't any smoking guns - no paper they talked of suppressing was actually suppressed, etc.
On the other hand CRU's loss of data is huge. They don't have any thing to support their conclusions. It is absolutely _not_ acceptable in science, as they claim, to go ahead and publish when you discover your data is lost! And it is outright fraud to know the data is gone and not disclose it when publishing. For this reason - not the emails - I think CRU has zero credibility now, and Hadley and even UKMET too if they knew of this.
It's worth noting that the claim is made that it's not a disaster because there are two other datasets that give the same results. But one of those is Hansen's data, and Hansen has been having even worse credibility problems, especially since admitting they don't check any data submitted before adding to their dataset. Not to mention Hansen not being a meteorologist, not working in a meteorological organization, etc...
The remaining dataset that supports the UN's "global warming trend" position is NOAA data. I haven't heard any claims of fraud at NOAA or any of anything questionable. But I also never see any !global! !warming! papers based on the NOAA data alone. I would like to see if the CRU and Hansen results can really be derived from the NOAA dataset without resorting to "adjustments" from CRU and Hansen.

Today, I made an attempt to prove to have2cit (and myself) that global warming is really man-made.
Last Wednesday, we cut down 4 large trees and today I started burning the useless parts in an old oil drum. It was a good fire: the flames came higher than the house. Because it has been freezing and snowing a little, the fire produced immense columns of smoke, which caused a dense mist to form in the neighbourhood. Also, the snow around the fire melted completely! Wow!
I will continue this experiment the next few weeks and would like to ask all fellow XPT posters to monitor the outdoor temperature at their place of living. My calculations predict a small rise in temperature globally, but local differences could occur. Thank you!

The first results are stunning! After yesterday's fire, we experienced the coldest 24 hours since January 2009. At first, I didn't believe my readings, but after checking my measurements against some other local measurements, I almost fell from my chair: unbe-fuckin-lievable! This looks very promising for the next few weeks.
Today, the experiment continued. Less smoke, but the fire produced a lot more heat, which is in contradiction with the model as the outside temperature was significantly lower today. I'll re-run the model during the night to see what comes up and if something needs adjusting.
I'll give an update soon.

Update:
Yesterday was a wasted day, experiment-wise. The fire didn't take on properly and after a while it started to rain. Luckily, the budget allows for a few wasted days.
Today was better: good, hot fire and a solid column of smoke.
Locally, not much changes in the weather over the last few days. The first reports from overseas are in and they look promising. DJT reported snow and has2chit reported a blizzard.

That's the curse/blessing of having an attention span greater than a gnat. Digesting my news in 30 second sound bites from talking heads isn't sufficient. I have to go online for newspapers and RSS feeds from around the world in order to gain a wider perspective, but hearten up my simple minded friend, without people like you, Obama could have never been elected in the first place. Sometimes I wish I could turn off my brain and be just like you because ignorance is bliss.

Wheels fall off global-warming hysteria: Activist-scientists cooked the books to foster alarm

I can't recall the wheels coming off the bus of any expert-driven hysteria as fast or as completely as they are now coming off the global-warming scare.
I suppose they must have came off faster from Y2K. At 12:00:01 AM on Jan. 1, 2000, when airliners didn't fall from the sky and power plants didn't shut down spontaneously or computers didn't freeze up all over the world, the air came out of the Y2K scare instantly. Billions had been spent on preventing that disaster-that-never-was up until midnight on the final day of 1999, then almost not a penny afterwards.
That is faster than the wheels are coming off the climate-change bus. But AGW -- anthropogenic global warming -- is a very close second.
News of the manipulations, distortions and frauds perpetrated to advance and preserve the environmentalists' cause celebre are so numerous and coming so fast, it's hard to keep up.
First, of course, there were the e-mails and computer files leaked from Britain's Climate Research Unit (CRU) -one of a handful of climate-research centres around the world that are the pillars of the United Nations' claims about impending climate doom. The CRU leaks showed many of the world's leading climate scientists discussing how they could torque their research to show more recent warming than there has been, conceal their "tricks" from other scientists and government investigators, and pressure scientific journals not to publish reports by dissenting scientists.
Then a couple of weeks ago came the news that the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), the UN's climate-change arm, had based its most recent findings on Himalayan glacier melt on an old study that had never been peer-reviewed or even published and which was based entirely on the speculation (not research) of a single Indian scientist who now works at the environmental think-tank run by the head of the IPCC, economist Rajendra Pachauri.
This by itself wouldn't be devastating, except that the scientist in charge of the glacier chapter of the IPCC's latest assessment report (AR4) admitted he had known the melt estimate was wrong but had included it anyway because "we thought that if we can highlight it, it will impact policy-makers and politicians and encourage them to take some concrete action."
That's not climate science, it's environmental activism, pure and simple -- using misleading figures to whip up alarm and bring about political action.
Another revelation of malfeasance this week was the discovery that the chapter on Amazon rainforests in the IPCC's AR4, the one that included the often-repeated claim that 40 per cent of the forest is under imminent threat from climate change, was written not by climate scientists but by an policy analyst who works for environmental groups and a freelance environmental author. Like the glacier chapter, it was written not to present the latest dispassionate scientific data, but to present a propaganda case that would produce the policy outcome the UN and the IPCC want. It confirmed that the UN is a player for one side in the climate debate, not the source for object facts.
In all, so far, at least 16 major claims made in AR4 (the report for which the IPCC won a Nobel Prize) have been shown to have originated with environmental groups rather than scientists, including the claim that climate change is already making tornado, hurricanes, forest fires and floods worse.
This week, we also learned that NASA's Goddard Institute for Space Studies (GISS) may have been playing fast and loose with its own calculations of global average temperature. Among the four main repositories of global temperature records, GISS is the only one to show the Earth still warming during the past decade. Now two American climate researchers -- Joseph D'Aleo and Anthony Watts -- believe they know why: Scientists at GISS may have been cherry-picking the weather stations they take their records from to increase global averages artificially.
The pair write that there was a "major" decline in the number of stations GISS scientists were taking readings from "and an increase in missing data from remaining stations, which occurred suddenly around 1990 ... a clear bias was found toward removing higher elevation, higher latitude, and rural stations -- the cooler stations -- during this culling process." The pre-1990 temperature records, though, continued to include these cooler stations. These changes tended to make temperatures before 1990 appear extra-cool and those after 1990 extra-warm.
This probably shouldn't surprise -- GISS is run by James Hansen, the scientist who first set off the global-warming scare in 1988 and who is an adviser to former U.S. vice-president Al Gore.
Hansen has testified in court on behalf of eco-vandals charged with damaging a British power plant, insisting they are guilty of no crime because they were acting in defence of humanity and he has called coal trains "death trains" and coal-fired power plants "factories of death."
Again, those are the words of an activist, not a scientist.
Does all this prove global warming is a hoax?
I believe it does.
But at the least, it shows the science is far from settled.
