Probation is hell. I would recommend taking the time in most cases, depending on length and whether parole will be involved after.

For some little charge like a year in county, it's better to do that(out in 4-6mo) than even 1 year of probation.

I don't know the particulars of this guy's case, but probation is hell.

If you want to have to punk out to some low level gov employee, then have at it. But most of the time you'll end up doing the time anyway.
