"Period books" are usually set at a specific time and place in the past. Turn of the century Brooklyn, Victorian London, WW2 Japan, etc...



Never heard of Ann Rule or Jeffrey Deaver. James Patterson sounds familiar (I've seen his books), but I've never read anything by him.
