Never got into Hemingway. Updike is good. As far as classics go...I do love Shakespeare. Cant beat the Bard!

Read "The Sun Also Rises" in the summer time while drunk, (preferably overseas in Spain or France) and you will get Hemmingway. Uhm, at least that is what did it for me after hating him for years as an over-rated hack writer. Then try a few selections out of "The Snows of Kilimanjaro" or "A Movables Feast" collections of short stories. I have tried "The Old Man & the Sea" a few times, but never really got it.
Updike is OK, but barely a step above whoever wrote scripts for Gilligan's Island or The Brady Bunch.
