You've never played competitive/high level soccer, have you? The elbowing and pulling the shorts shit? Happens all the time. You don't punch someone or yank them to the ground over it. You retaliate in kind and don't draw attention from the refs or get yourself fucking red-carded and make your team play down a man.

I quit or got kicked off sports teams because I was constantly told that I was too rough...when I backed off I was told I wasn't playing hard enough so I never participated in sports past middle school. I was a big kid my whole life and usually looked 2 years older than other boys my age from the time I was in elementary school. One time parents from an opposing team complained about me before a pee-wee football game becasue they thought I was too big to be in the age group...I was actually one of the youngest players on the team. I never liked sports but when I was a kid the few active male role models I had were excited about me participating but I really hated it so I just did other things once I got into 6th grade. Computer club, model rockets, CB radios/electronics, video games and the like. I did bully most of the football players in High school though....that was sort of competitive.

I played on an intramural basketball team in high school that had more fouls than points. Our soul purpose was to hurt the other teams.
I spent most games trying to kick people in the back of their knees.

No matter if it is hockey, lacrosse, rugby, football, baseball, or women's soccer, there are appropriate levels of aggression and competition and then there is doing something stupid because you can't control your emotions. If a person has just lukewarm intelligence and mediocre social skills or better, poor sportsmanship is the warning sign of a defective personality.
I'd guess it is about on the same level as torturing small animals or setting fires.

It's quite simply about aggression..then what you can get away with. It's a learned behavior that builds upon itself.
I hear ya EY, you are not wrong but there's a certain level that some kids play at that surpasses the PC thinking you are clinging to. I'm talking D-1 kids that are looking at prep school and will do whatever it takes to win or at the very least, represent themselves.
She wasn't right but she has heart... You can't teach heart.
Simple as that.

I think we're speaking a different language. The player with "heart" is the one who gets up and keeps playing hard after being fouled by the person cheating, not the cheater.
Unfortunately, I was raised by a father who was a volunteer football coach who made Vince Lombardi seem like a pre-menstrual ballerina when it comes to being "non-PC" in sports, but if I had ever pulled something as stupid as that chick I would have been non-PC punched in my non-PC head by my non-PC father.
I was expected to work harder, practice longer, perform better and play cleaner than anybody else, not cheat. Sorry, the non-PC good old days in sports were never about getting away with cheating. Vince wouldn't have tolerated it, my old man wouldn't have tolerated it, and I don't tolerate it.
I don't know what is worse, the PC police who have tried to change competitive sports, or the lazy, weak, and un-athletic dweebs who cheat and rationalize their behavior as being tough and non-PC. I still play the occasional pick up game and there are plenty of both around.

I dunno about these reactions...
My kid plays soccer and is D-1 material but wants to play for and attend a better school, and he will. His current team(s) are extremely well coached. Lou is right when he says you don't coach the competitiveness. No one tells a kid how to find an edge- if they want to win they find a way.
Mine is more likely to be the kid that says something quietly to the other kid that makes him lose his shit like the girl in the video, except it won't go un-noticed by the ref. Then he scores the PK.
Soccer is every bit as physical as American football when well-played, and twice as mental. I'm sure there are many more sports as examples.
Edit: I mis-spoke as to D-1. American Football schools are classified differently than other sports, per wiki, with classes within D-1. So the kid wants to play soccer and matriculate, but in a place other than you hear about on Sportscenter.

So sad that the punch, pull hair, talk shit, do steroids, lie, cheat, or steal, it isn't about the game or how you play but only if you win, non PC, non-athletic, tough guy has become the norm.
Thank God for the memories of good sportsmanship and honest competition among athletically inclined kids (encouraged and enforced by good, clean, tough, coaching) who all enjoyed playing sports.
I'm sure that many parents would trade all the good memories of their children for a nice shiny trophy to put on the mantle and brag about, but not all. Fewer still the actual athletes.
