Stalin really fucked up Russian and Ukrainian agriculture with his collectivization scheme, requiring the USSR to impost vast amount of American grain, while pre-Soviet Russia had been a net exporter of grain. Perhaps Stalin's biggest fuck up was disposing the Red Army further west than its fortifications, leaving it unprotected from a German attack and then allowing a German surprise attack by wilfully blinding himself to the obvious fact that Germans were preparing to invade by convincing himself against all of the evidence that the Germans would not attack prior to 1942.
