Ok, so I have all these old family photo albums from 1910's to the 1930's. I'd like to put them on disk, but have no knowledge of scanners. The albums were left to my old man by his grandmother, and since he passed away I get bombarded by requests and inquiries from relatives about them. I'd like to just mail disks to everyone so I can stop being shaken down at family events. Can anyone recommend a good (not too expensive) scanner? Are there any features I should look for in a scanner? Thanks.

I just got one of these http://www.amazon.com/gp/offer-listing/B000VZOYW4/ref=dp_olp_refurbished?ie=UTF8&condition=refurbished (not a refurbished one though) to do just what you describe plus it has a negative scanner and a lightscribe discburner built in. It's also a nice printer. Without spending a lot of money to get a scanner with a document feeder, scanning old photos is a pain in the ass.

Definitely do not want to use a document feeder with old photos. New photos barely make it through a doc feeder, anyway. You are talking fragile stuff here. Get a good all-in-one with a flatbed scanner. Do 10 photos a night, and you will get there eventually.

I like HP. All the hardware is made in the same gulag in china. It is the drivers that sets them apart. HP has the best drivers in the industry. Go HP.

Bottom fish newegg and overstock...

I got a cheap (under $100) Canon All-in-one flatbed scanner/printer for $65, a year ago. It gets the job done. and it prints good too. The scanner works well.

Picked this one up a few years ago: HP Photosmart 3210 All-in-One. It's ok.

And that's how it went down. He said a large white chocolate no fat no foam extra hot latte with a shot of caramel.

I always wondered what Thalidomide victims thought of the movie "Scanners".

Newegg, open box has an HP all-in-one for $34. It will probably not have cables or the driver disc, but you can download the drivers from hp's site.
