That is an interesting assertion. I think the conventional wisdom (which I happen to agree with out of common sense and personal experience) is that the only ones currently left in the Republican party are the religious zealots (e.g. Moral Majority & Jerry Falwell types), good old boy racists (e.g. the Coke Stevenson & David Duke types), and conservative wingnuts (e.g. Glenn Beck & Rush Limbaugh ditto head types). Everybody who was not hard core crazy or who is even mildly centrist has abandoned the party and either become independent or moved into the Democratic camp.
If you suspect that the religious right zealots have been marginalized or left the party, where do you think they have gone and who in the party marginalized them? Did they abandon politics altogether or did they all become liberal Democrats?
Unfortunately, the Republican party sold it's soul to the devil (a.k.a the religious right) in the 1980's and, like every deal with the devil, they are suffering the consequences. Sadly, those folks will still be calling themselves Republicans long after everyone else has left the party. They bought it, they own it. That was the deal.
