To be honest, I do not feel that I deserve to be in the company of so many of the transformative figures who've been honored by this prize -- men and women who've inspired me and inspired the entire world through their courageous pursuit of peace.
But I also know that throughout history the Nobel Peace Prize has not just been used to honor specific achievement; it's also been used as a means to give momentum to a set of causes.
That is why I've said that I will accept this award as a call to action, a call for all nations and all peoples to confront the common challenges of the 21st century. These challenges won't all be met during my presidency, or even my lifetime. But I know these challenges can be met so long as it's recognized that they will not be met by one person or one nation alone.
This award -- and the call to action that comes with it -- does not belong simply to me or my administration; it belongs to all people around the world who have fought for justice and for peace. And most of all, it belongs to you, the men and women of America, who have dared to hope and have worked so hard to make our world a little better.
So today we humbly recommit to the important work that we've begun together.

The only thing Obama has done that sets him part from every president over the last 40 years is the Egypt speech, and there was no follow-through on that.
The stated purpose for the award was "working towards nuclear disarmament" yet every president since Nixon - except perhaps Clinton - has signed a reduction agreement with the Russians (not all of those were ratified by the Senate). And Clinton may have done one I just can't remember. Even Bush jr. did one.
The problem this may cause for Obama is that it may reinforce "Where's the Beef?" perception - one more accolade that wasn't earned for a promise never to be met - a talker rather than a do-er. This could be real problem for the Democrats in the 2010 elections if unemployment is near 11% nationally - and much higher in Califoronia and Florida - and people start asking "what have you done for me lately?" Even if Obama does pass some sort of health care there's a risk that those without jobs will view that as entirely unimportant and ask why he hasn't put as much effort into jobs and the economy.
PS. The Norwegians amazingly overlooked the fact that Gitmo is still open and that there is so far no plan to close it.

With Obama, the question should be, "what have you ever done?". But, it would be nice if more people even started asking just the "lately" question.
Notice the time-line. I'm almost at the point where I'd be surprised if this weren't the White House pulling some strings as a follow-up to the humiliation suffered at the hands of the Olympic Committee.
I saw that he was nominated just 2 weeks after being elected. Was there any pre-set date where the nominations either win an award or not? Or, is it just whenever the Nobel people get around to awarding one or not? If it's just whenever, it's too much of a coincidence with the PR failure undergone at the Olympic Committee for this to come right now.
If so, major blunder by the White House. I was just looking at internation press. Everyone is asking, "Hhuh?" Would have been better off just letting the Olympic story die on its own.

President Obama smells like roses, since his predecessor invaded Iraq rather than focus on nailing bin Laden, to the tune of more than four thousand dead American soldiers and tens of thousands more maimed, and then topped it off by presiding over the worst financial panic and economic depression since the Great Depression.

I'm surprised people are surprised. Obama didn't accomplish anything to get elected president why should he accomplish anything to win a nobel. Also, a panel of left wing Norwegians selecting Obama as their beauty pageant winner for peace in '09 is only slightly more shocking than algore winning a nobel for the scare tactics he employs advocating "global warming" or jimmeh carter's nobel prize given his anti-semitic rants. Obama is in good company. I'm sure he's proud.

I saw more of the coverage of the Nobel award. I consider Carter a passable recipient for the award, but they were saying comments came out of the Nobel committee that that award was anti-Bush:

Clinton came before W. So, the Nobel committee wasn't as geared up.
You watch that whole segment and it becomes clearer the Obama award was a political statement by the Nobel committee just saying "we like the way this guy talks". And, political statements are fine. But, if that's all the Nobel is, it's just five guys appointed by the Norwegian parliament saying "we like this, we don't like that". Who cares?
I was even able to let the Gore one pass, without agreeing with it, but thinking, "yeah, okay". This Obama one, they've completely jumped the shark.

Dubya did nothing to be elected president, in fact he wasn't elected, he was selected. His actions in office with respect to Iraq merited an indictment fo war crimes more than a Nobel prize. If you doubt me, go to google and find the Nuremberg indictment and pay close attention the specifications regarding war of aggression.

W. had been CEO of a couple of oil companies and was governor of Texas for eight years.
Obama was a man who decided he should be leader of the free world when he had only two years of exposure to national politics as a junior Senator from Illinois. And, his only executive experience had been doling out money to radical educational groups under the auspices of a man who had formerly bombed the US Capitol Building.

Heard that Dubya was able to buy into the ownership of the Texas Rangers for only $50,000. Dubya was not elected in 2000, he was anointed by the SCOTUS, and he was the worst POTUS since Frank Pierce and "Old Public Functionary" Buchanan.

You know you have a bitter liberal grasping onto every straw he can when he's still complaining about the 2000 recount. Bush won the initial count and not only 1 but 2 recounts. Yes you can criticize Bush's resume for this and that. I know I did. I didn't vote for Bush in the 2000 Republican primaries. I desperately wanted McCain. But, the fact is Bush had items on his resume suitable for the presidency. Just the one item being governor of Texas for 8 years blows Obama's resume away. The main points on Obama's resume were community organizer and state senator.
Incidentally, the reason Bush was able to buy into ownership of the Rangers for less money than the other partners was because he actually had a role in the development of the organization whereas the other partners where just guys with money who sat there. Bush handled PR matters like getting the local sales tax raised so the government would finance getting a new stadium. And, when the group Bush was part of sold the team, a lot of profit they made was due to the team having a new, bigger stadium which meant more potential for future revenue.

Don't forget the fact that Dubya joined a small community of Presidents that lost the popular vote but won the electoral vote. The electoral vote is an archaic, out of date concept that does not have any real reason to still exist.

Enough of the point the finger @ Bush whenever somebody criticizes Obama. The thing is Obama clearly doesn't/didn't deserve a Nobel Peace prize even if the thing is meaningless. It just adds more hype to his jive and unnecessarily feeds his ego.
