The electoral college serves the purpose of spreading the vote out so that the smaller states would have more power than they otherwise would have in a straight population based vote.

After losing that election, Al Gore went on to make several ridiculous comments, including a movie based on pseudo-science that won him a Nobel. After losing, Gore proved what a looney he really is. You guys should be glad he didn't win. You'd have to be living down his legacy like the Republicans are having to live down Bush's.
