Self-effacing humor IS his stock in trade. Though he abuses it as a defense mechanism to deflect criticism. It gives him the freedom to take boorish shots at people he doesn't like. Can't argue with the idea he can get laughs from it but CBS is not laughing much. So I disagree with the idea that he will want to, or be able to, continue playing his dark side as the mistakes of a simpleton.
