In the spirit of Panzer's personal blog style of posting, I decided to document the evolution of my fourth attempt at learning oil painting from a book.

Day 1: about 30 to 45 minutes into the first day of my latest project, just laying down the basic shapes and some colors. You can still see parts of the charcoal sketch underneath.

I think one of the objects was an apple. The other might have been a lemon or something that slid out of my butt after a Blatz beer binge.

I've been making an effort to be nice to ^him because he really doesn't like me. I appreciate that, btw.

Someone else maybe could deal with that.

Have you noticed yourself feeling kinda high from working with oil paints and the related solvents?

Seriously, most of that stuff is toxic and you should invest in a nice, lightweight and comfortable organic vapors mask.

Ever noticed how in stories about famous oil painters some of them have a crazy streak? Anyway dude, keep up the painting.

I have to use oil paint to redo someone's bathroom tomorrow, I would probably get very high in that enclosed space if not for using a mask. The high from confined oil paints sucks. You can taste the paint in your bloodstream, in your mouth and on your breath for hours after you are done painting.

EDIT:
You probably are not using enough paint to get high from it. I am not sure, maybe you should clean your brushes in a huge bowl full of solvent and keep it right next to you?

Also, no offense if you know this already, but you can cut oil paints with solvent and then paint with them if you want a thinner look to the paint. It seems obvious but for some folks it isn't.

What solvents are you using? I like Varsol (which is Canadian for paint thinner) but sometimes Acetone works better.

Just use mineral spirits- it's less nasty.

I never heard of using mineral spirits for cleaning brushes.

If you're hoping to catch a contact high this simply won't do, you know?

I just realized that there is a HUGE difference in the appearance of that original pic on my laptop compared to my desktop. The background is actually supposed to look painted light brown.

I just received yesterday 22 Loew-Cornell brushes that I won on eBay. They are professional grade and came out to $2.10 each.

Whats with the painting of balls? You can at least step up and draw wheels.

Woohoo. 40 minutes till I get to slather a poorly ventilated bathroom in oil paint!

OK, another 30-45 minutes in (after giving it a few days for the undercoat to dry).

I guess I figure it's about 70% done.




Some of the white streaks and speckles are reflections from the overhead light and cellphone camera flash and not part of the painting.

You don't suck. Really. My old lady hangs out with all sorts of pretentious types. From Doctors wives to all sorts of social ne'er do wells. Seriously, I've gotten piss fucken hammered at sooo many martini sipping charity events that I've lost count of who we care for. Whatev.

I've seen worse.

Back in the day, when I used to be a part of modern civilization, and engaged to an Art History major in New Haven, I guzzled gallons of free alcohol at similar events. I do miss it. Having come from mopping floors, manual labor, and scrubbing toilets just a few years prior, I too dismissed some pretty nice people as pretentious. I bet we both know there are some really nice folks at those foo-foo events--no matter how hard they are to suffer through.

Anyway, I'm not overly ambitious. Once I can paint something like this, I'll move on to a new hobby:

Any news on the painting?

This is the first night I have had off since the start of the new fiscal year/ academic year. I plan on getting drunk tonight, but doubt I'll get back to the painting until next week when I have more than a couple days off in a row. But I did splurge and buy some fancy, new, imported oil paints (Blockx hand mixed pigments from Belgium) I have been wanting to play with and compare to the bargain bin discount paints I have been using.

Anybody know what happened to Xeox (the image hosting website that disappeared and took all my pictures with them)? They just went *poof* and vanished from the internet.
