It appears to be hysteria - the people claiming to be stabbed don't have puncture wounds, didn't actually see a syringe, etc.

It could be Chinese media manipulation to prevent more rioting but I don't think so - the interviews with the doctors were much too realistic to be the usual ham-handed Chinese propaganda.
