I've been sick all week and this morning I coughed up something that looked like it came from outer space. No fever though. On the plus side, I still have some of the old timey, good Sudafed left. The shit they had to take off the market because it was used to make meth.

I had a bad cold a few weeks ago, but I don't think it was the H1whatever. I just drank a little apple cider vinegar and it went away. Airborne is usually good, but only if you start taking it as soon as you feel yourself getting sick.

Bragg's Apple Cider vinegar is the only apple cider vinegar worth the while. Honestly, if you feel an illness coming on, drink some Kombucha tea. More effective and tastes better! There are so many flavors; the passion fruit one has a sweet flavor. Ditch the soda, processed food, and store bought fruit juices for a few days and you'll be fine.

Here is the number of people you know that will get swine flu : ZERO. The garbage you're eating and the cigarettes you're smoking pose a far larger risk to your health. And there is no cure for the common cold. Get plenty of rest and eat well. It will go away on its own...

Not so sure. I live in a high risk state and my principal friend said they had a good number of kids (I think 80) at his school test positive for H1N1 the first week of school. I saw in the news today that my old college, WSU in Washington state had 2,000 cases of it during their first week back in class. That's out of 18,000 students.

gia is right, Braggs is best. That clear shit won't do anything for you. As for the airborne lawsuit, I don't remember that. I get reeeeeeeally groggy the next morning after airborne pm so if you have to wake up early, keep that in mind (unless you've already taken it before). If your throat is so sore that you can't swallow, chew on ice. It always helps me. I get sick about once a year. It's always around the same time and it can get pretty bad if I don't tackle it early. Tatty is right, there is no "cure" but you can do a few things to lessen the effects on your body.

Would anybody here be opposed to a preacher recommending that you pray to Jesus to prevent and treat the flu? Or a family of Christian scientists who preferred to stay home and pray as their family member lay sick with the flu?

if you're implying that i don't trust docs or vaccines, you are incorrect (check conspiracy thread), it is just that there is a difference between preparedness and panic/pandemonium (alliteration!) .
I know HIV and the clap is real, but I do not ask every woman I boink for her full-panel test before we get it on.

No problem. Hell, I have just gone through the mind-numbing experience of "discussing" a topic with Cameron Keys, so I understand the frustration.
Yes, I do sort of have a "hidden agenda" with my question, but not the GOTCHA! type of trying to trap somebody hidden agenda and not the YOU'RE WRONG, I'M RIGHT! kind of hidden agenda. More like I want to understand how you think sort of hidden agenda (by the way, not really YOU in particular Tatty).
But since you are here and did respond, I will direct it at you. So you don't believe that prayer prevents or cures the flu?

no I personally do not. If people truly wish to pray, etc. more power to them. Tommy Chong of all people posted a real nice vid on his idea of prayer and it was a very cool and introspective take. When I had cancer, I know my mom prayed a lot and she seemed to derive comfort from it. But I also went to the damn doctor.
What angers me is when people refuse medical attention or worse do not take their children to the hospital when they are sick because they believe in prayer over medicine.
http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2009/08/01/national/main5204229.shtml
Secondly (and I don't wanna get in the big atheism fight again) i think if prayer worked and god was a solid dude, why would he not cure everybody who was sick that prayed?
I like the idea of introspection and reflection, but not as a cure.....

I'm not trying to be sneaky so I should admit upfront that I do not believe in prayer either.
Really, what I am trying to get at is the WHY more than the WHAT.
Why people believe in a particular cure is interesting to me more than what they believe in.
Why do people choose to believe in prayer or aromatherapy or feng shui or tea or detox diets or raw foods or enemas or bloodletting or traditional western medicine?
Does the average person know any more about how a traditional western medicine prescription for an antiviral medication works than a detox diet or aromatherapy? Why do they choose one over the other?

Well if you check the conspiracy thread, people get the whole "they are out to get us" idea in their head and there is no changing their mind. It's funny (and sad) that so many people (conspiracy theorists, radical lefties, religious nuts) will completely reject stuff that comes from doctors and scientists. I love it when people malign these groups with the old "what the hell do doctors know?" or "scientists don't know anything." Really? These people sacrificed countless hours of sleep and forked over tons of money and studied their asses off and they know less than some jerk off with a website or a religious text? Give me a fucking break...

If you are trying to make a statistic , you have to go by how many cases of people got the swine flu in the nation compared to how many died in the nation , not how many people there are in the nation .

So should those people be held to the same standard as medical professionals? If somebody on an internet chat board recommends an "alternative medicine" to prevent getting sick or treat a condition and another person suffers some adverse outcome, should they be able to sue them?
As things stand now, the average internet "alt med" advocate could recommend that somebody drink some new fad herbal tea to treat swine flu and if the person gets sick and dies or suffers liver or kidney failure or has an dangerous interaction with other prescription medications they are taking, there is no legal recourse, is that OK?
Until relatively recently, it used to be the case that if somebody was lying injured by the side of the road and some non-medical person attempted to help them, but unintentionally did the wrong thing, and caused them harm or death, it was considered just an unfortunate accident. However, if a person with medical training attempted to help them, and something went wrong (even accidentally or even if the medical person did everything right) and the victim died, it was considered a criminal offense. Is that right?

If they are adults, i could give a shit if they want to ignore science. If kids are involved it's a different matter. I had a lot of kooky suggestions when I was not doing so hot and I get a lot of kooky suggestions now that I work out a lot. I go to people who know what the fuck they are talking about; if some loser wants to drop 40 dollars on acai or goji juice, fuck him.
people who get serious medical advice off of chat boards get what they fucking deserve...

So you are saying that 9079 people in the nation have had the swine flu and 593 have died ? If you are , and you do the stats on that , the % of dieing if you get the swine flu is like 5% chance .
And if person who said in the article that half of the USA might get the swine flu this year iss correct , that would mean about 16,500,000 could possibly die .

From the Washington Post : Quote:
While the seasonal flu is associated with 30,000 to 40,000 deaths and 200,000 hospitalizations each year, the lack of immunity to the swine flu virus probably will lead to many more people becoming infected, sick -- and possibly to 30,000 to 90,000 deaths, the council said. And while most deaths during a typical flu season occur in the elderly, swine flu is more likely to kill children and young adults, the panel said.
the article:
http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2009/08/24/AR2009082401733.html
now, i don't want anyone to get sick or die, but the numbers seem to come down when they get called on it. And, as i said in the conspiracy thread, I am all for people vaccinating their kids.

Look, I really don't want to get in the middle of this, but 4 small boobies has really hit on a pet peeve of mine...
All resources are not created equal. An AOL article about a closed environment (University setting), written by a non-medical person, using terms like "swine flu like symptoms" and not "culture positive H1N1 swine flu" is almost completely useless. It is not credible. It is not equal to information from the CDC or about a hundred other credible sources of information.
There is a huge difference between a college student skipping class because of subjective "swine flu like symptoms" and the objective viral cultures and labratory testing being used by the World Health Organization or the CDC.
Sorry about that outburst. You may now return to your regularly scheduled debate.

Well put, EY. And this whole thing kinda reminds me the AIDS thing (sorry to keep going back to the conspiracy theory idiots): You have people on one side yelling "Don't vaccinate your kids!/AIDS is a Myth!" and on the other side yelling "We are all going to die!/Anybody can get AIDS!"
Neither side really does any good for the public at large, IMO....

Look man , i am sorry to get ya all in a tizzy , but i am only posting the facts that were on AOL . Did you read the Title of the Article ? It's not my fault if AOL purposely named it that to get the AOL'ers attention . But it did work , and i was inclined to click on the link and check it out .

To give my opinion on the matter (which you will probably disagree with) doctors and scientists are indeed important. Nobody can with argue that. BUT there are some things that can be fixed through natural cures and diet changes. For example, one of my neighbors found out they had Coeliac Disease. He was in a lot of pain but eliminated gluten and products with gluten in them and he now enjoys a happy, healthy life. He lost some weight as well because he is eating foods that agree with his body. When it comes to prayer, I think praying helps people keep sane when in extreme pain or watching someone else go through pain or sickness. Praying instead of taking medicine when needed is retarded though.

But you do know that the term "Celiac Sprue" or "Celiac disease" was discovered by traditional western medicine, researched by traditional western medicine, and defined by traditional western medicine? The treatment of pursuing a gluten free diet was discovered and recommended by regular old M.D.'s
Is there some other story going around the alternative medicine community that doesn't credit traditional western medicine for the discovery, description, diagnostic criteria, and treatment plan for celiac dz? I would love to know this.

Can you point me in the direction of the alternative medicine community? You're took that post a little too seriously, and I probably should have mentioned that he went through like a zillion tests (from his doctor, of course ) before he got his diagnosis. I didn't include the whole story, my bad. Of course I know that diagnoses come from a doctor and diseases are discovered by doctors. That's also why I included the disclaimer about you disagreeing with me ahead of time. Thanks.

I'll admit, I have a large book of natural cures. There's some interesting stuff in there, but I've only used a few cures. Things like aromatherapy for relaxing or some random pantry items for headaches or a sore throat. I'm not really familiar with homeopathic doctors or their "joojoo" but I think there are some things people should leave to the medical professionals. If someone is a nutritionist and giving nutritional guidance, that's great. I just don't think that should be the ONLY option for serious diseases or anything like that. Another example, this girl's mom went on an alkaline-forming diet (or something like that) when she had cancer. She had heard that the cancer cells couldn't survive in that environment. I'm sure it's the chemo that saved her, but she swears it was her diet.

Exactly, while the media and the germophobics are screaming about the 300,000 cases of swine flu that are supposed to hit this year
The word "cases" means nothing by itself.
300,00 people _infected_ seems preposterously low. If it fizzles then maybe only that many _visit their doctor_. 300,00 _hospitalized_ seems possible but high. 300,000 _deaths_ seems very unlikely this winter; maybe next winter.
The virus making the rounds now has not mutated much since spring so we know what to expect for the next few months.
It is highly infectious but the symptoms are very mild. The majority of victims won't even know they were infected, perhaps thinking it's a mild cold or allergies, unless they're tested for some reason (like a school where one kid gets really sick and is diagnosed with H1N1, then they test everyone else - of the 2,000 at WSU who have H1N1 I bet most never knew they had a flu until tested).
The virus could mutate into something more lethal by the end of winter, or by next winter - nobody knows. Or it could just as easily mutate into something not very infectious and just vanish like the Spanish influenza.
Just because it's easy to catch doesn't mean it's going to be a big deal when you do get it. CDC is worrying about what if the symptoms become severe while it is still very infectious. That may happen but not yet.
PS. The worst forms of Spanish influenza appeared the winter after the initial outbreaks, so CDC is not unreasonable to worry about it now or next winter - it's like flipping coins, the fact that the first round was mild doesn't mean the rest will be.

Exactly, while the media and the germophobics are screaming about the 300,000 cases of swine flu that are supposed to hit this year
The word "cases" means nothing by itself.

I may be wrong, but you sound to me as if you don't get the basic concept of CDC&P.
It is their job to monitor and follow all of these types of illnesses. How many people die from an infection is not what determines if the CDC&P follows it.
On the other hand, you have the local media whose only job is to exaggerate and scare you in order to get you to watch their asinine show.

The best thing about H1N1 is that it makes the choice of Halloween costumes easier.
I'll either wear one of those ridiculous Mexican wrestler masks and cough the entire time, or wear a full-face respirator with a filter canister on my back.
