Jefferson Nat'l Forest is very nice.

This is rare, there is much, much less crime in the woods, than in the 'hoods.

I like to backpack and camp so much, my dog even has a backpack. Nothing too strenuous, the longest we were out was 5 days, and the most I've ever done in one day was 16 miles. But more often, 3 days and about 8 miles a day.

Of course, now I'm spoiled with the RV. But we still do a lot of day hiking, and ride around to remote places in the Subaru. That's what we like to do.
