Actually they were elected by the people to do the following:

1/2. Get the troops out of Iraq.
2/1. Remove anything that serves to remind anyone that some guy named Bush just spent the last eight years in the White House.

3/4. Stop global warming before the earth becomes a giant fireball and we all die horrible deaths like marshmallows in a campfire.

4/3. Development some alternative energy policy to prevent reason 3/4 from happening and to break our need to tickle Saudi Arabia's balls every so often.

Saying that the Democrats were elected by the people to fix health care is like saying that George Herbert Walker Bush was elected by the people to yak on the emperor of Japan. Just because they decide to do it doesn't mean they were given a mandate to do it or were elected to do it.
