Close to 700 USPS Branches on Post Office Closures List.

Does anyone still use the USPS.....they should have spun it off back in the day....

Quote:

The Postal Regulatory Commission, an independent government regulatory committee, released a post office closures list earlier this afternoon, highlighting a group of close to 700 offices nationwide that are up for review and possible closure. As increasing pressures have mounted on the age old government service – from business’s increasing reliance on email, the loss of recession-sensitive mail-based advertising and high gas prices – the US Postal Service has found itself in a hard place with little choice but large budget cuts.

With an estimated fiscal shortfall of $7 billion, despite a recent 2-cent raise on stamps and staff cuts, the USPS is expected to shut down or “consolidate” hundreds of their offices throughout the United States. For the full list of post offices on the list, check the Postal Regulatory Commission’s website, http://www.prc.gov.
That’s not all. In an effort to reach fiscal normalcy, the US Postmaster General, John Potter, recently asked Congress to consider reducing the days of postal delivery from the current six day a week schedule to a five day a week schedule.

While neither snow nor rain nor heat nor gloom of night have ever stopped the USPS, it appears a global recession and new technology just might. We’ll see.

How do these people have folks standing in line all day long at their branches, no matter which one I go to, and still don't make any money?

You have to for a lot of things, registered mail being the one I personally have to use a few times a year.

Only the government waits until they lose $7 billion to do massive cut-backs.

Cue the recently well-celebrated Liberal arguments that the post office is a shining example of government efficiency and that's why the government is completely capable of running our health care system, here.

Forget the idea that something as simple as transporting letters vs. the intricacies and massive size of special interest groups that do a lot to corrupt the national government in the health care system. If they can run the post office, they can run your health care!

I live in northeasten Pennsylvania in the old coal region. If you drive between the small town of Freeland, PA to Hazleton, PA, a distance of about 10 miles there are 5 separate postal districts (not counting Freeland or Hazleton) that were created over 100 years ago when the coal companies owned everything. The coal companies have been gone for 50 years but these post offices remain open. Each requiring a building, a postmaster and whatever employees are on staff. Virtually all the services these offices handle could be done out of Hazleton. The Postal list is out, and not one of these rinky-dink postal offices are slated to close. Not a single one. No wonder they are all going broke!!

thats because if it was spun off a long time ago....it wouldnt be a second thought to close or consolidate those regions....Take private business such as Greyhound Bus Lines. They had more offices pre 2000....they did some research into what was profitable and decided to close many of the non cost efficient stops. Naturally it was shitty if you lived in BFE....but if you dont like it....MOVE.

I live in BFE and my branch or for that matter no branch in my state is on the list. That's because BFE is HUGE. They are handling the mail out here with private rural carriers who destroy their own cars in the process. They employ one postmistress and keep shitty hours from a customers standpoint. I bet a lot of those locations on the list are paying high lease rates (esp the ones I saw listed in airports).

I hope the USPS makes it through, and can be more efficient. Actually, I expect they have to make it through. There is no other government controlled way of the govt to communicate with the citizenry, and they will have to be able to guarantee that.
