The entire argument of religion is that those who believe have the moral high ground. I watch tons of porn and make no such claim. But I will say that I don't think wish-thinking about some guy with a beard makes you any better than someone who thinks it's all bullshit.

But you treat people like you're better or at least smarter than they are. Calling them childish names and treating them like they're stupid is no better than what you say they do to you. I wish you could get your head around that.

No I got it a long time ago, son. You'll find a lot of Christians who don't believe in a literal translation of the bible. It is a product of the times and people who put it together, but despite your prejudices it does contain wisdom and moral precepts that most people alive today, Christian or not, find right and true.

Badge of honour? (see I spelled Canuck style). I could care less. I don't believe. The arguments you make about your travels kinda make my point. Governing from a book of myths ain't exactly awesome. Seems you don't dig on other religions that much. I don't dig on any of them.
ha yeah the 'black friends' thing. What are the chances of having every single person you know being an atheist? Pretty much zero.
Loop, of course not all of them do. But if you are operating from a standpoint that unbelievers are doomed forever, aren't you pretty much looking down on them? Maybe that's a tad simplistic, but most holy books are pretty clear on that point.

Hmmmmm maybe that wasn't the best phrase to use. I just think it's a bit of a struggle to see someone as a peer and neighbour if you think they are going to burn in hell for eternity. Does that make sense?
Penn Jilette kinda touched on that talking about a born-again trying to convert him more out of love etc. But isn't it a little condescending to say you want jews/atheists/teh gays to come to Christ/Mohammed because you love them? Just a thought....

A very good point, Loop. But that's the rub. If one is going to take bits and pieces of the bible/quran , is that person still a believer? I'm grateful that people have stepped back from the more literal interpretations, but I would argue that you could have a half-decent moral compass without any of it.
A serial killer might or might not say that quote, but the sad fact is that a lot of people still go nuts if you don't believe. Look at the rotten shit that got said about Pat Tillman after he got killed in Afghanistan. The guy was doing something he believed in. Was that shit really necessary? By a lieutenant colonel, no less.
The other thing that concerns me: Islam is the fastest-growing religion on earth. And the only branch of christianity on the upswing right now is evangelical (bible literalists). Is that good for society? I'm asking that sincerely, not sarcastically. Anyways, i think maybe this should be another thread.

I don't think I can determine for another person what they are nor would I want to or even care enough to. I think only they themselves can determine that. Also, I don't understand the part about "taking bits and pieces." People do that all the time- at least people that I know.
When I had just moved to LA I meet this shabby looking guy who lived in the Hollywood Hills near Mulholland Drive. The guy slept,dressed formally in suit and tie, in a
coffin in the cellar surround by tanks of piranha fish, and from time to time got up to play dirges on a big electric organ. In the day time he worked as a prop master for the studios.
Once, at his house, I caught him waxing his chest. "Mechanical Men don't have body hair" he said to me. "Pinocchio didn't have body hair" He definitely took his job very seriously. When I was leaving he gave me his business card which only read "God is Love." I remember he really enjoyed to discuss the apocalypse but also had this errie habit of going to the cemetery and putting flowers on the graves. "I wish I knew all of them" he used to say.
It turns out he actually wasn't religious and wasn't crazy. David Lynch was a big fan of his. He actually knew a lot of people in Hollywood but you'd never have known it because he never "looked" the part. He said he only read the bible once, came upon that line, and in his words "that was it." I actually still have his card in my wallet. I remember when he handed it to me he was so serious- like "this ain't no joke kid."

I don't know much about Islam except you have to take at least one pilgrimage to Mecca. As far as the doctrine itself I've never read it, but I doubt it says "Do a Jihad on anyone that doesn't comply with my words." The only Islamic people I know are real peaceful and very family orientated peoples- I've never known an extremist and never been screamed at for not reading the Koran or even knowing what exactly it says. Shit now I might have to read it as I feel very stupid for commenting on something I know nothing of. Maybe we can just ignore what I said.
