An intermediate option would be to get a DVD player that has a usb input. I got one that also upconverts to 1080i for $45 in an after Christmas sale. You can either shuttle files with a USB flash memory stick, or even hook your entire USB HD up to and you're good to go.

Here's a portable DVD player with USB input and AV outs for $100. Chuck can shuttle it between his RV and house and it's not much bigger than a tempeh burger.
