I know that everybody is against free porn sites that pirate content, but what about those VOD clip sites like the ones advertised under the links section on the left of the XPT screen? Is there any difference between the desirability or compensation when selling a porn movie on a DVD as opposed to downloading it digitally on a VOD site?
I guess what I'm asking is, why do people bother to continue to produce and distribute DVD's instead of going completely digital/online?

I think many companies have been shifting their focus away from DVD's for some time now. Older online content can be pressed to DVD and distributed after it's lost it's online shelf life.

I think it's a tactile thing, like owning a book instead of downloading one. And if you have a spouse or roommate you can stash your shit instead of them accidentally logging on to your archive of shame...

Deprecated business models don't go up in flames at any instantaneous point. If guys who have been doing it are still making money, they just keep going till the revenue dries up.

It seems as though the majority of posters here are DVD buyers? I would never have guessed that. I couldn't buy a porn DVD even if I wanted to. Nobody will ship or sell to my area code of the Bible Belt. It is either the internet or not at all.
I think that the separation between digital media via the internet versus via traditional TV disappeared a few years ago, it just hasn't yet trickled down into everybody's living room yet.
I watch High Definition movies on my living room television which are searched for, bought, and downloaded using my remote control and my TV and downloaded from my ISP via a wireless internet connection and watched on my large screen living room HD television from the comfort of my recliner or couch. I not only don't think that this is cutting edge technology by a long shot, I am thinking it is about time I upgraded.
It is starting to sound a bit like people pointing out all the drawbacks of the horseless carriage so far on here.

It amazes me that people still can't figure out that they can connect their computers to their TVs. All you need is a DVI to HDMI cable or DIsplay Port to HDMI cable if your computer is newfangled enough. If your TV doesn't have digital input or your PC digital output, it is *way* past time for an upgrade. And if you persist in not wanting to hook up your computer, you can get a dedicated bridging device such as an Apple TV, which is kind enough to also cover legacy crap that has Component Analog input but no digital.
That said, I mostly stick to DVD because, as I've posted before, of the porn industry's lack of a centralized, non-DRMed, reasonably priced, non-subscription, high quality, video download repository -- an iTunes for porn. Until that happens, the free stuff unfortunately is way more user friendly then the paid stuff, and the industry is rapidly killing itself. They need to learn the lesson that so long evaded the record industry.

Not true. I could figure it out, I'm an electronics tech, and I've thought about doing that. But, I'm lazy. Plus, it's really hard to get to the TV inputs in the RV, and my ancient TV in the house just keeps going, and fits the room well.
How is the quality of the typical (~100 MB/scene .mpg) download played on a digital TV, compared to DVD? Some of the stuff I download looks crappy even on a 15" screen, I don't know if displaying it on a 27" digital system in a small RV would make it better or worse.
I do have what I consider a lot of downloaded porn, not by Fatman standards, but compared to my DVD collection, about the same. It would be nice, now you got me thinking. I do like to research and go shopping for gizmos...

An intermediate option would be to get a DVD player that has a usb input. I got one that also upconverts to 1080i for $45 in an after Christmas sale. You can either shuttle files with a USB flash memory stick, or even hook your entire USB HD up to and you're good to go.
Here's a portable DVD player with USB input and AV outs for $100. Chuck can shuttle it between his RV and house and it's not much bigger than a tempeh burger.

what kind of format do the video files have to be? I have a dvd player with a USB port but only used it to play music from a mem stick.

So guys what's the point of getting a clear picture when watching porn? I think the shit I download from bangbros is in sufficient quality, I don't personally get the need to clearly see all the stretch marks, herpes outbreaks and hair on whores' bodies.

If you mean something similar to Beowulf, they already exist. The porn cousin to Hollywood lifelike animation is not nearly as polished or realistic, but it is moving along. More about the style of 3D animated PC games. Sorry, although I've seen the website ads, and even clicked on an ad or two out of curiosity, I wasn't real interested and moved on quickly.
As far as eliminating meth fueled meltdowns, performers, etc. It will still take people to create the product, and voice technology lags significantly behind video rendering, so you may need voice actors.
Anyway, my only point was that this type of porn already exists, if I stumble across a link, I'll post it.

There was Final Fantasy - The Spirits Within, an astounding piece of CGI which tanked commercially. The same studio made an episode of The Animatrix, improving their work towards photo-realism further. There was at least another feature film, Final Fantasy VII - Advent Children. The studios used to produce these types of CGI features are very expensive, I assume, and should be out of the reach of all porn studios. But probably they would not accept the offer anyway. And it takes a lot of time if it's supposed to look any good. Nothing the mass production of porn will embrace. If the stuff available today would come close to anything remotely realistic, it'd be new to me. Disney and Pixar make films with stylized characters not only to let kids smile, but to save a lot of money it would cost to push the medium to where it would be an actual alternative for live action acting - in the premium league devoid of porn associations at least.
