I guess what I'm asking is, why do people bother to continue to produce and distribute DVD's instead of going completely digital/online?
Deprecated business models don't go up in flames at any instantaneous point. If guys who have been doing it are still making money, they just keep going till the revenue dries up.
Hell, there are still record stores around..
Interesting point. Record stores still exist because there is still demand for vinyl. It sounds different, it feels different and has become ridiculously rare. I don't see porn aging the same way, but it's not exactly being archived in the Smithsonian either. A lot of what is floating around on the internet is gonzo, low production value crap right now, is there a different market out there that has not been properly tapped? Is there an evolving black market for Porn now? You can't find the Rough Sex series anywhere online. The Max Hardcore stuff is going to take a tamer road now as well I would imagine. In five years, is a bootlegged copy of Slap Happy going to be worth a couple of hundred dollars?
