...This thread is not about drugs(not yet anyway) so until it is properly derailed anyone seeking drug content should come back after the second page.
So about two months ago I started working out again... Took it easy in the beginning started seeing some results after about three weeks and being happy to get anything out of these old bones really started to push after that.. 3 mile runs and twenty mins of weights every other day... A protein-amino supplement and a diet you might consider strict since it isn't a requirement.
I loving how I feel, feeling the burn and getting a little attention from the 30 y.o.s around the pool.. and then...
Tonight I going heavy on the triceps push-down bar when ......
I hear this slight snap, crackle sound I thought it was the machine cable rubbing against the frame or catching on one of its 300 or so pulleys....
when I heard and FELT the POP in my right elbow
It is sore but I can't really say it hurts yet, but I assume tomorrow will not be pleasant
The last time I heard a sound like that come from my body was about 15 years ago I left first base and stretched my teammates single into a triple during adult softball(the shock of seeing me hurtling in from 3rd when I shoulda pulled up ALWAYS resulted in an amateur throwing error)as I slid safely across home plate I heard a similar sound and looked over my shoulder and thought to my self"wow the catcher has the same cleats as I am wearing" to my horror it turned out,It was my own shoe I was looking at and I needed arthroscopic surgery to repair my knee
I was startin to look good for a minute. I was even gonna call Garfield and ask for some tips.. But all is not lost.. fortunately I masturbate with the other hand and maybe now I can have some buffalo wings and a beer

I sense a little homoeroticism. Maybe a pent up latent homosexuality thing that Coke's been hiding for strong, virile black men?
Things are beginning to make a lot more sense now.

how we doin bish. i'm catching this late but if you were never in mind numbing pain you might try the same exercise with lighter weight and see how it feels. i've had plenty of these pops, especially in the shoulders, but usually only when i went too heavy too soon.
anything past the elbow is touchy for sure, i developed elbow tendonitis once because i used to stop and hold the weight a few seconds at the end of front lateral raises (bad advice i listened to). tore it right to shreds, but wasn't immediately noticeable, just snuck up on me like sarah palin's cock hungry zombie hand crawling up a young boy's shorts.
i cried myself to sleep for weeks before handing the crisis over to the lord. after god didn't return my calls i consulted a real god, a sports doctor, who insisted i simply stop lifting for 6 months. fuck that. i ignored the advice but did cut out forearm exercises, and it healed up.
plenty of protein, rest, ramp up the weights slower esp. if you're just getting back into it, you'll be fine. if it persists see a sports doctor.

Hey Mark thanks for the tips less weight higher reps worked like a charm... I want to see where it can go this time. Oddly I feel better than ever at this age!!!! You strike me as a wise man, I am updating my resume` and considering a career change. I have n asso. in computer science that is older than most new actresses, video and editing experience but have been working in sales for the past five years... any advice in that area?

Yeah? Go study the basics of Constitutional law so you can rant and rave about superficial shit like the color of people's skin...
But seriously, you weren't insulted by being called a bigot, were you? The one line that could be construed as derogatory, and you do that thing where your chest swells up and you start gurgling all that stuff no one cares about as if to re-assure yourself.
It doesn't matter here whether or not you have money. The only thing we know about each other is what we type in. It's not like we can go over to someone's house and take a ride on their boat. And, you forgot to mention my favorite salient detail of the shtick, ancestry from Plymouth Rock..
You've got a sense of humor about all kinds of racial slurs, just didn't think being called a bigot would so much as make you blink.

You got me all wrong, bro. From what I know of you, I like you as an individual. In truth, it's African American/ghetto culture that I have a problen with. It is self-destructive ("stop snitchin'!"), backwards looking ("reparations!"), overly dependant ("cutting food stamps is racist!") and has distorted perceptions about unfairness ("that Cambridge cop is a racist!"). To those wrapped up in the culture (you don't come across this way), I have a news flash: all life is unfair. It's tough. So what.
Whites/racism are not responsible for blacks' problems in 2009. Just look at how successful first generation African and Asian immigrants are able to be in this country. Their work ethic and attitude makes the difference. If someone like Al Sharpton heard me say all this, he'd call me a racist and say that I just don't get it. I'd tell him it's all true and that he can go fuck himself. That's the impasse.

Would you be surprized to find out that I agree with most of what you said ? Only difference is that I don't believe that those attitudes are only perpetuated by african americans.. I believe that you can find people who blame others for their own short comings and who want something for nothing across all colors and backgrounds. Any healthy exchange of ideas will have a point of contention though, and we will have to agree to disagree about the police... (not the cambridge incident per se) So what is your career advice to a 40 something single Dad, in the Florida area with my qualifacations?

Here it is: the reason for Coke's thought-pattern and behaviour. Coke feels he's (been) treated unfair by life.
Good to have that out of the way. No thanks necessary; it was my pleasure.

Fortunes are secured during down times by being a contrarian. If you have assets and/or the ability to obtain credit, you might consider purchasing your own business during the next year. I say this in part because you'll be able to take advantage of others' misfortune and low-ball like crazy. You'd have to look for the perfect situation. Personally, I am looking for real estate bargains. Not for fast flips, mind you, and not for just any property. I don't approach selecting real estate as a straightforward commodity (like 3 beds/3 baths = X), but as an art. For example, one might find an older house with a huge yard, buy it with a low-ball offer and then split the yard into 2 or even 3 lots. Also, I am onto several stocks that are presently undervalued by as much as 75% (for the long term). And if "cap n trade" and/or socialized healthcare are defeated, it will create tremendous market spikes to capitalize on (for the short term). Just watch the Dow Jones on those days.
You're not going to like this part, but I think Obama is going to be forced to move to the center (so he will end up doing less damage to business) and that he will be a one term president like Carter. He and Pelosi have fatally overreached. When most people voted for him, they were not expecting socialism. They took his moderate tax cutter speak at face value. There will be a course correction and an opportunity for the economy to expand like never before when his anti-business/anti-successful liberalism is deballed.

While I see nothing in Coke's advice that demonstrates understanding how things work in ways serfs are incapable of, that advice about starting your own business ain't bad, and it is under-utilized. Muhammad Yunus won the Nobel Peace Prize for economics in 2006. He started some bank giving micro-credit loans to poverty stricken people in India I believe. It was something like that. He summarized his philosophy for doing so on the Charlie Rose show, saying "Don't wait for someone to give you a job, go make a job!". And yes, a lot of poverty-stricken Indians started business and boot-strapped themselves out of poverty with the loans his bank made.
But finding the opportunity is always a pain in the ass. At the last family funeral, I ran into a guy who turned out to be my mother's cousin on her mother's side. Years back, the guy was barely surviving and just looking in the newspaper for a job. He ended up with a company who audited utility bills. That's basically looking at company's utility bills and finding errors in them. You split the amount of money the error was worth with the company. The cousin just roamed around the distant region he lived in selling this service. Before too long he looked at the company and decided they had too much bureaucracy and overhead, so he could do it cheaper. The wife was livid, "you don't know how to do what they do!" He just said, "Nope, but I can figure it out." 25 years and 2 (expensive) divorces later, he's telling me about it in my grandparents' living room. Then he's telling me about the bay house he's thinking about buying as a 2nd home. As he's leaving, I notice his SUV is a Lexus.
Not all businesses require start-up capital. But, it's the imagining them that's the trick. And, it's probably a bad time to strike out on your own now, unless you can think of something you wanna do that does well in a recession. But, it ain't a bad time to start keeping your eyes open. If you ain't looking, you'll never find it.

SEE I knew I wanted to hear his thoughts! And you guys are right.I have wanted to start my own business and what has held me back is the fear of failure. With a child to feed a guaranteed pay check was always more of a secure standing than the leap of faith involved in launching my own biz. All of your suggestions have merit, and you and Northrop have given me something to think about

Actually Coke wasn't talking about starting a business, he was talking about buying one. I've never really considered going that way, but have heard about people buying businesses without putting all kinds of money down. I just wouldn't throw a bunch of money down on something that you don't know is going to work.
When I was 16, I was doing landscaping work. A guy who was 25, Troy, had just moved down with his 3 kids and wife from Detroit. They had no money and were piggy-backing on his aunt and uncle coming down, staying in their house. He'd been a crack dealer/gang member in Detroit and moved to get him and his family away from that lifestyle. He had stories about being shot and having to keep driving to get away, how he had killed some guy and then a few days later was a pall bearer at the guy's funeral... Remember he came to me one day all aghast because some teenagers were in his neighborhood were following him around making fun of him. One of them even through mud at his car while he was driving by. He told me, "I know when I need to buy a gun, and I need to buy a gun!" He didn't understand at all the kids were just looking for something to do and being obnoxious was the best they could find... They weren't crack dealers protecting territory or shit like that.
Anyway, he hated his uncle. Thought the guy was completely crooked. The example he'd really rave about was his uncle buying business. Uncle owned a small funeral parlor up in Detroit. So, in his new town, he opened up the yellow pages and called every funeral parlor in the book, offering like $3K to buy the place. Everybody just ignored the guy. Except like the 20th person he called, who took him up on it. Troy felt like uncle called everyone in the damn book looking for someone that could be ripped off. But, it didn't sound like it was necessarily so bad to me. There was probably a lease he assumed that the previous owner wanted to get out from under. Maybe existing commitments to customers. Guy probably just wanted out and an extra $3K didn't sound like a dream, but fuck it. I'm gone.
I've heard a couple of other stories about buying businesses real cheap like that, but that's really the closest I've come to knowing the people.
Other ideas for Bishop that could be done on the weekend and keep his steady pay check. I know there are people who trade cars and make money. Had a roommate in college who bought a used car, drove it for a year, then sold it for more than he paid. They got those auctions for used cars, then park the car in a shopping center with a for sale sign. Having sold cars, you should have a good idea of what people will buy and some kind of idea of how a car works internally, so would know when a mechanic is full of shit. Although now is probably a good time to be buying cars, selling them's probably not a great idea and it's not like you could sit them in your yard and expect them to appreciate.
Then, a more unusual one. I know there are consultants who will teach people how to be more socialable and meet people. There was that guy on VH-1 who had that show "Pick-up Artist" who was making a living teaching people to meet girls even before he got that show. You've got the personality, but don't know about the teaching part of it. Plus in your red-headed neighbor thread, you were saying "They always pick you." Don't know that that's the right philosophy to teach guys who are all scheming to bang as many chicks as they can. But, if some guy could throw me a pitch making me think he could teach me something, I'd pay $50 for a night of that. $250 if the guy had past results that could show me he could teach me something I could use after he was gone. Then, you get a few guys with the money to tag along to the bar with you after you've taught them a few things... Just buy a couple of those books on the subject and see if you could develop a sellable syllabus for the guys.

That one, that wasn't for Bish. The original justification for going on that long was that when people hear about how other people did it, it makes them more willing to believe they can. Of course, it's better when you talk to the people who actually did do it.
Real reason I probably went on and on about Troy (ex-crack dealer) was because I haven't thought about that guy in a looong time. He was awesome, but was completely a fish who had just swum up in the wrong damn pond.
His wife made extra money up in Detroit filling out the neighborhoods' 1040EZ's. So, down in her new town, she shows up at my house and is asking my Mom if she can do her taxes for a little bit of cash. Mom's looking at this lady who's got a little bit of a ghetto accent and is still wearing her KFC uniform cause she just got off of work. Mom tries to explain that her tax returns end up being about 50 pages long and that 15 years ago, she was a CPA...
Next time I'm at Troy's house drinking 40 oz. Shlitz Malt Liquors with him, at about 2am he starts bitching a fit, "My wife out there, trying to work for money, nobody will let her do their taxes! Fucking ignorant rich white people! No fucking generosity!" Don't remember how I got out of her doing my own taxes, but she did NOT do them. I do still drink Schlitz on rare occasions...

Anyway, On Sunday I was feeling extremely spry so I go up an extra 10lbs on my standing curls. The reps at the new weight went smoothly but at the end of my workout I noticed a sleight... pressure surrounding my tailbone.I dismissed it and spent the next hour tossing the football to my son in the pool. As the evening set in I noticed that the
pressure had morphed into a kind of stiffness. I sat on my heating pad, watched a movie and went to bed.
On monday morning I woke up and swung my legs onto the floor, AND WENT STRAIGHT TO MY KNEES! Certain that I must have slept through getting 12gauged in the spine.
I had a similar experience after going up in weight on a butterfly machine as a teen. That time it was the same feeling only between my shoulder blades.
I knew it was a muscle-pull and spent mon.,tues, and part of today, popping tylenol like m&ms, making foxhole prayers to God and plotting every thing that involves standing up so as to get as much done as possible before I sat back down again.
just as when I was younger on the third day the worst seems behind me(Hey Mark! No working through this one buddy I could hardly walk mon. and tues.)
Getting in shape is so much fun!
Back to the gym tommorrow

i estimate 90% of the injuries i've had were due to bad form, and the other 10% were due to drunk driving - ten years now and i still can't shake the image of that crumpled baby stroller in the rearview, laying there in the crosswalk like a pile of mashed potatoes. no movement at all. i was okay though, only a minor neck injury from whipping around so fast to see.

kidding aside its good prep and moves you toward bigger and better things. and the next young lady whose head you spin around with enough of the right words that she lays down for you, you'll be off the starting block like a human torpedo. nothing more magical than a new girl doing the black man's handshake on your pin for the first time. amirite?
if you can maintain a degree of discipline in your lifestyle, you reach a critical mass where the laser-like focus extends to all 24 hours of the day, and not even PTA mom with the mudslide under her shirt (think sammura) can switch you off. in fact you accelerate, the adversity is like lightning through the veins. power and glory. soon you're actually seeking out awful beasts, just to see how low you can go and still complete the act.
so it really becomes an issue of personal bests- chasing them, beating them. the good news is, you can accomplish virtually anything if you're willing to pay the price.
