How does taking pills affect your sobriety, Charin?

Very correct question. I'm taking them at night, and they seem to help me calm down and relax. I've had them for over a year, but only played around with them a couple times. They don't cause any cravings, and I am working a decent program.
I am curious if I am into a recreational dosage or not, and what I may be missing. They don't seem to have a great appeal to me, I like them a little, but I don't want to let them get in the way of anything. I've heard them mentioned as something people enjoy a lot, but I only seem to enjoy a little. I enjoyed the Vicodin I got when I broke my collarbone playing softball a lot more, but my refill ran out, so that was that, no big deal.
Some in AA would call this a break in sobriety, but I am alcoholic and not a drug addict. I did get a prescription...and I honestly feel no danger. Just curiosity. I was surprised I could order these online.

Edit-The beers definitely ain't gonna happen! Maybe that's it, the effect isn't enhanced by alcohol.

So, this means its perfectly ok to do a line of coke every now and then since you're an recovering alcoholic in AA and not a drug addict in NA? I'm not being snarky here, but I am having a hard understanding this.

Cocaine and marijuana are purely recreational, except in rare cases. Experience shows the marijuana maintenance program doesn't work for alcoholics.
I'm goofing around a little bit with something I have a script for, that I actually get valid medical benefit from. Something I've had sitting around, tested then ignored, for over a year. Now, if I make pill popping my main recreational activity, or I have an urge to wash them down with a beer, I will immediately cease, destroy, and tell the prescribing doctor. End of that problem.
By the way, a psychiatrist trying to help an alcoholic is like a bone specialist trying to help a jellyfish. Nothing there to work with. I just kinda tell them what I think I need.

I've seen this movie before with several friends. People start abusing drugs (street drugs and prescription drugs) and become addicted for the same reasons that people drink and become alcoholics. Problem drinkers that allow themselves to mess with drugs either fall off the booze wagon or develop drug problems (and vice versa).

I've had some experience with Xanax and it's always given me amnesia. Recreationally, I'd take a few of those .25's you have there, if you have no tolerance to benzos, then move up. That's as small as they come.
And, yes, mellow or calming is the best way to describe the high. Some claim euphoric results. I often mixed them with alcohol, though I respect your position here. Benzos are addictive, so be careful.

Tread carefully, my man. I'm coming from it from a different angle (heroin addict friends), and there has been mixed results when prescription drugs (percs, the -pam family) have been introduced into their lives.
Anyone in your group have experiences they can share?
Edit: what is it for? Anything depression or anxiety related, I'd be happy to share my experiences.....

I'd LOVE to get you on a jury. It's always a good idea to watch for signs that a potential juror might be hippyish.

Anxiety and depression. I have depressive episodes, and anxiety when I start getting better. Started about 3 years ago. Might be triggered by seasonal affective disorder, my father's death, or changes at work?
Lexapro 10mg and Welbutrin upped Thursday from 100 to 200 mg seem to be helping a great deal. And it feels really good, when I feel overwhelmed by a plethora of little things, to do a Xanax or Valium and be able to calmly focus on one thing, and be OK with things.
Back to therapy the 31st. I've been taking people's advise this time, going to a shrink instead of letting my DO prescribe, and going to a therapist my grand-sponsor who is in the business suggested.
Experiences I've been close to in AA is that drug addicts can definitely be "triggered" back into their active addiction by medicine, but alcoholics seem to do just fine as long as they stay close to the doc's prescription. My sponsor's take is "don't be a martyr, get the help you need."
I'm far from alone, several people I know with substantial sobriety are battling depression. Probably similar to the percentage in the larger population, I guess, but maybe we are quicker to seek help. Medication seems to help most of these folks. I've not inquired about what meds everybody is on.
I went to a depression discussion forum, and Jesus, it was the most depressing thing I'd ever seen. Young people debating whether to cut themselves, talking about having no hope for life. I just want to lie on the couch and sleep a lot when I get really bad, but I'm doing much better. I know some people with serious psychiatric disorders, and I'm nowhere near them, thank God. But, this thing did kick my ass hard for a while.

Right on. And I need to follow a little more of my own advice lately.

Pills rule, pop a couple of Xanax and go watch Gag Factor. Write a review. Try some Oxies, too.

When i was younger a friend gave a few xanax and prozac . They didnt do anything to me . Or at least i didnt notice .
I personally don't like pills of any kind . Except like aspirin an tylenol and cold medicine they serve a purpose . To help you heal .
Those are pills mess with your brain and leave you permanently changed . You brain and body need them after a while . If you think you feel a little depressed now , you take these pills , and even if you think you feel better , you take like 300 more thru out several months , and then your brain needs them to function , and you try to stop and you become more depressed when you first started out .
