Hereditary factors can make you more likely to develop an addiction, but they are never "the reason". The "reasons" are circumstances you find yourself in(or put yourself in) and the CHOICES you make. Anyone can become an addict if they let it happen, regardless of family history.
You're a little quick to absolve yourself of personal responsibility for becoming an alcoholic. Oh, I forgot. You have a liberal worldview. That's the modus operandi.
