Florida bankers will implement a "No hat, no hoods, no sunglasses" policy in an attempt to cut the number of bank robberies in the state.
Bank robberies in Florida rose 40 percent in 2007 to 361, putting the state ninth in the country. In response, the Florida Bankers Association, the FBI, the Florida Department of Law Enforcement, the Florida Highway Patrol and Fraud-Net implemented the new policy Thursday.
"Bankers aren't going to just hope robbers won't come," said FBA President and CEO Alex Sanchez. "We're implementing policies and technology that will help prevent bank robberies and apprehend robbers if attempts are actually made."
Banks participating in the voluntary program will post notices throughout their branches telling customers they should remove hats, hoods or sunglasses when entering. If customers refuse, they will be directed to a more experienced teller or a more secure area of the branch. No one will be denied service.
A similar policy worked well in Missouri, according to the FBA, where the policy was implemented in 2002, leading to a 33 percent drop in robberies. By 2005 robberies had dropped 47 percent from 2002.
